Check Out Talia da Silva’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Talia da Silva.

Hi Talia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been drawing pretty much ever since I was born. At first, it started with copying little cartoons I saw on television or tracing images I found far too complicated. But as I grew, so did my confidence in my work. I had a pretty gnarly high school experience, and not in a good way.

Truthfully, the only place I felt safe was the art studio. Sure, we were given assignments we didn’t want to complete, but at least I was in my element; at least I was safe. My mom has always been incredibly supportive of my artwork. She was an artist once, and so was my great-grandmother. In a way, I feel like I’m carrying on the legacy that never got to be fulfilled.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a hard road, and it’s taken years for me to become what I am now. Even though it was challenging, I enjoyed every second of it. Every obstacle was a chance for me to better myself. Through the many rejections and acceptances, I’m more than happy to experience the events that I have.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am mostly known for my watercolor and ink pieces, but recently, have learned to branch out into other mediums. Currently, in addition to watercolor, I like to dabble in digital media, as well as art repair work. I produce my prints, stickers, pins, and shirts from home, and work at Meow Wolf Denver as my full-time job. I hope to work for my employer at some point, but I’m not in a rush to do so.

I am personally proud that I built up my career from the ground up by myself. I had support from my friends and family, but what I do is truly MINE. I am also exceptionally young considering everything I have accomplished. I have no idea where I am going from here, but I’m excited to find out.

We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking.
Art within itself is a risk. You can never predict if others will like your work if your products will successfully sell, or even whether or not your business is sustainable. And honestly, that’s kind of the fun part. Taking that extra step is an adventure, even if you’re scared. I remember for my first art show, I was TERRIFIED that I wouldn’t sell anything, but I ended up breaking even and then some. I think that one thing other artists have to be prepared for is being declined.

At first, I took it to heart, but now, I use it as a building material; What can I improve on? What did I do well? etc. My mom would always tell me the well-known saying, “If at first, you don’t succeed, try, try again”. And she was more than right. For years, I just keep on pursuing what I love, and all I’ve gone is upward.
