Conversations with Rocky Trifari

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocky Trifari.

Hi Rocky, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For the past ten years and counting, I have been documenting my misadventures on my travel blog, The Rocky Safari, while exploring different places around the world. I may be an introvert, but I love stepping outside of my comfort zone. From being stranded outside of the White House at the age of 15 to getting lost in China’s Forbidden City in 2015, I have found myself in more unusual situations over the years than I’d care to admit.

Thanks to frequent solo travel and going on extended backpacking trips for years at a time, I’ve learned how to embrace long-term travel and sustain this type of traveling lifestyle through remote work. Now my primary goal through blogging on The Rocky Safari is to teach others how to travel, make money online, and design a remote lifestyle that supports those ambitions.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha, the road has been anything but smooth. The obstacles I’ve faced along the way are one of the primary topics I write about on my blog. Misadventures have been a major theme while traveling the world. One thing that is important to me as a blogger is portraying an accurate representation of my experiences.

I am not one to sugarcoat things, and while I do try to find the silver lining in everything that happens, I make a point of blogging about the good and the bad so that my readers always have a realistic understanding of my experiences. I think there’s more value to be had in content from people who share genuine experiences that people can more easily relate to.

While traveling by myself, so many things have gone wrong. I nearly found myself homeless on my first-night backpacking in Greece, I injured myself within minutes of arriving on a remote island in another foreign country, I’ve gotten lost countless times in different cities, I’ve been threatened by a stranger with a knife while trapped on a bus for almost 13 hours driving from one country to another, and I’ve been jumped on by a child who was attempting to mug me after using an ATM in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The purpose of sharing those incidents isn’t to make me sound clumsy or careless. I’ve learned a lot from my mistakes and I use my blog to showcase that. I want aspiring travelers to understand that the world isn’t perfect and things can (and probably will) go wrong. Don’t let fear stop you from doing something great. Take the chance. Live. Let life happen and see where it can take you!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am known for my travel blog: The Rocky Safari. In the Swahili language, “safari” means “journey.” So The Rocky Safari is a play on my name, Rocky Trifari, and I use my website to help teach aspiring travelers how to travel long-term, make money online, and design a remote lifestyle that supports those ambitions.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
For me, blogging is about creating a community. I love when readers reach out, introduce themselves, and share their stories with me. I do my best to respond to most of the emails I receive and I would be more than happy to connect with anyone who shares a passion for travel or who resonates with any of the topics I have written about. I’ve helped coach many aspiring digital nomads who either weren’t sure where to get started or who wanted to set up a travel blog and needed help getting started.
