Meet Lauren Winton of Winton Media in Berkeley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Winton.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I knew I was going to work in technology since I was a kid. At the age of eight, I requested a palm pilot for Christmas. My family encouraged me to keep down this odd path and I started to explore other related avenues. In high school, I was introduced to video editing and fell in love. From then on, I realized that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life… as clique as it sounds.

I went to film school for post-production in Santa Fe, then Denver. Interned and worked for a small stint in NY then settled back into Denver with the help of a wonderful teacher from college. The fast pace lifestyle of NY and extreme competition in LA was not where I seemed to fit in. My company Winton Media was founded in 2008 after I took the leap to freelance with the goal of producing compelling content with the aid of a handpicked crew of established professionals that I have created strong relationships with. In Denver, Winton Media has been active in the Denver film community with ties to local production houses, ad agencies, non-profits, and storytellers. I have recently been traveling more and more to edit on site all over the country.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! Having “transitioned” from a 9 to 5 job to freelance life was incredibly scary but exciting. Having to create my own tools to survive and set up a stable work environment was very challenging. There were too many times I literally waited for checks by the door and took some not so glamorous jobs. But I bought a lot of coffee for potential partners and clients and have established myself in the community. So, it was worth the struggle!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Winton Media story. Tell us more about it.
Winton Media is a boldly independent collective of directors, cinematographers, editors, producers and motion graphics designers. We have successfully completed broadcast quality content for commercial advertisers, non-profits, creative agencies, local businesses, and storytellers from all over the country. I oversee and participate in much of the overall work. In the pre-production phase, I set up meetings with clients, plan shooting schedules, casting and budget. In the production phase, I play the role of editor on set, to oversee the edit will be good to go. In the post-production phase, I edit the piece and tie up loose ends. Which is my main role in the company. I’m most proud of how far we have come. It’s refreshing to have a roster of talented crew that I can call upon. I think the overall range of the creatives I work with set us apart from any other. As far as what sets me apart from others, I am able to complete all aspects of post-production and am skilled in motion graphics.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5 to 10 years, I hope to expand the reach of our company outside of Denver. I think Denver has so much potential. Whether it be location, resources or creatives, I imagine many will flock to the opportunity to work here.  Denver will always be our home base, but recently I have been traveling all over the country. Soon, I hope to bring a crew with me more often.
