Meet Brittany Boehnke, PT, DPT of Mojo Physical Therapy in Lafayette, North Denver Metro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Boehnke, PT, DPT.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Brittany. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey started at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina where I completed my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. It was in Durham where I absolutely fell in love with the profession – working with and helping people reach their full potential. Duke University gave me the opportunity to intern with multiple clinics throughout the country; the last clinic brought me west to beautiful Denver, Colorado. While in Denver, I realized I not only had the opportunity to land my dream job and grow my career, I also had the opportunity to develop and grow my love for adventure and activities I never knew existed.

To be transparent, my first couple of jobs weren’t exactly what I expected. Within the first 4 years working as a physical therapist in the Denver area, I realized the job of my dreams didn’t exist. I struggled in a standard insurance-based physical therapy clinic that consistently placed 15-20 patients on my schedule per day. I did not like treating multiple people at a time and not getting the time to listen and focus 100% on each individual. I also realized I was required to treat people according to their insurance policy instead of their needs. It completely took the autonomy out of my job. I worked hard for my doctorate, however insurance companies still dictated the treatment. I knew I had to find a different way in order to help people and provide the service they deserved and need.

This led me to start Mojo Physical Therapy, which is a physical therapy clinic with two locations in Lafayette, CO and concierge services throughout North Denver Metro and Boulder areas. Mojo Physical Therapy provides 1-hour visits, every visit. It makes physical therapy convenient and personalized. My vision has been to create a clinic where the therapist has complete independence when creating a plan of care specific to each person’s need. That includes where the treatment is provided, what their goals are, and how many visits are needed to completely achieve each and every goal.

Mojo Physical Therapy strives to bring back individuality to our healthcare system and provide the treatment each person deserves while treating the provider as the educated professional they are.

Has it been a smooth road?
As I expected when starting a business, there have been rewards and challenges throughout the process. The greatest reward includes the opportunity to provide exceptional patient care. I love to work with people and figure out how to help them. This keeps me motivated and focused each and every day. The tough part for me has been figuring out all the other components of developing and growing a business. For example, learning marketing, accounting, and sales… those topics weren’t a common point of discussion in Physical Therapy school. I’ve utilized all the struggles as a learning opportunity. As Ryan Holiday says: “The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition” from his book The Obstacle is the Way.

Another challenge and learning opportunity have been creating a system to educate and move past utilizing insurance companies for all health care needs. I have done a lot of research focusing on what is best for both the therapists and clients. Pay-for-service proved to be the top choice. With more research, I discovered this option also allows each person to submit their invoice from Mojo Physical Therapy to apply to their insurance as an out-of-network service. The therapist is not dictated by insurance and can provide treatment to people how they deserve to be treated. This is also great for the client, as they have no surprise bills in the mail from their insurance they are in control. Even better than being in control, they are treated as people in healthcare in a space they are comfortable in, with complete attention by a physical therapist.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Mojo Physical Therapy works with goal-oriented individuals, seeking to live a healthy and active lifestyle and take control of their health and wellness. This includes people wanting to work on injury prevention, address an acute injury, tackle the chronic pain they’ve been living with for too long and/or recover from a surgical procedure. Mojo Physical Therapy uses evidence-based practice, functional dry needling, manual therapy techniques, exercise prescription and multiple other techniques to provide each person with the individualized treatment they need.

I am most proud of Mojo Physical Therapy for being a company that truly puts the client’s needs and goals first, and gives time to address them. I am proud to be changing health care from being dictated by insurance companies, to be dictated by those receiving the care. I am proud that physical therapists and clients have the opportunity to talk throughout each week to check in on progress, difficulties, and to increase compliance. I am very proud of decreasing the number of visits a person needs, by increasing the quality of each visit.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I believe our city is the perfect place for a business like Mojo Physical Therapy. With all the activities Denver and Boulder have to offer, indoor and out, there are many individuals seeking to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Staying on top of preventative health care and addressing all injuries will allow the population to continue to be active and able to do the activities they love.
