Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly Rebscher (Stevens).
Molly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I sort of have that cliche photographer story about always having a camera in hand, but its the truth! My dad had always loved film photography and got into digital as he got older, so I was always around photography. I even remember doing a little photo shoot with my babies, and eventually took a film class in high school and photographed my sister, horses, flowers… and really anything else!
I never realized a creative career is possible so I went to school to become a teacher (because I figured there were ALWAYS teaching jobs, and my mom had been a teacher). I brought a little canon digital camera along with me and would sometimes convince my friends to go find a field of sunflowers and do little “photoshoots.”
As college progressed, I realized my heart wasn’t in teaching and I always felt that I couldn’t imagine working for someone else, and wanted to actually make a passion a career. I at first thought this meant being a personal trainer, but while I was working on a guest ranch in the mountains my love for photography re-entered my life and I decided that I would make it a career!
I started small with taking photos of friends with their horses or a few family shoots, but it quickly grew and I started shooting weddings which snowballed into me going full time!
I am now a full-time wedding and couples photographer, and travel all around the country to family ranches, beautiful mountain locations and more!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think I got lucky with being a little bit naive in the beginning about how saturated the industry was because that shielded me a little bit from the fear of failure. I definitely had some clients decide to go “other directions” in the beginning and there were absolutely times I didn’t have anything booked on my calendar. Luckily, I had my, then boyfriend, to encourage me and I essentially just made up my mind that I would continue to improve my skills, learn marketing, and make it happen!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is known for telling stories of couples who feel connected to the western lifestyle and especially to the outdoors, in one way or another. A lot of my couples get married on ranches, farms, or somewhere in the mountains and LOVE the outdoors. I tell their story through an emotional and authentic approach, and love to incorporate places that mean something to them! I also show up as myself on social media, which helps connect me to clients who feel comfortable with me and like I am already their friend.
What was you like growing up?
Growing up,I was HORSE CRAZY and loved being at the ranch riding every day or outside doing something. I was outgoing, bossy and also creative! I was born and raised in Northern California and my parents have always loved the outdoors and imparted that to me and my sister. My dad used to sail around the world, dive for fresh seafood, guided backpacking trips and was even a ski instructor! Because of that, skiing, hiking, horses, kayaking, and basically anything outdoors was a huge part of our life growing up!
