Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Campbell.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
A lot of times you don’t think that the hardest, lowest part of your life will bring you the most amazing opportunities, but here I am. I struggled with an eating disorder in high school and part of college. Recovering from it was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Now I’m a Registered Dietitian specializing in eating disorder recovery, disordered eating, and sports nutrition. I love what I do and it is incredible seeing others get to a place of recovery as I have!
I decided to start my private practice after only 2 years of being a dietitian, but it was the best decision I could have made. Creating my schedule, practicing within the values and beliefs I have, and having a work-life balance is pretty great! I get to create lasting relationships with my clients and learn about each of them as a whole person. I’m so grateful to all of those that support me, encourage me, and have confidence in me as a solo provider!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think there was a single class in college for my dietetics degree that taught us how to start a private practice or run it… aka business classes. It’s been a challenge to learn the business side of things and eye-opening, but I’m learning a lot and feeling more confident in my business plan each year.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Registered Dietitian that specializes in eating disorders and disordered eating recovery, sports nutrition, and freedom from chronic dieting. My approach focuses on helping people find peace with food, trust in their bodies, and experience joy in movement.
I consider myself a “non-diet” or “anti-diet” dietitian so I am different from many other dietitians whose messaging is focused on good food/bad food, food rules, and weight loss. I believe all foods fit, diets fail YOU, and all bodies of any size can pursue health. I work from a weight-inclusive lens and enjoy dismantling diet culture with my clients.
I’m also trying to focus more on sports nutrition as it is very common to see disordered eating/eating disorders in an athlete population. I hope I can help active people and athletes find peace with food and fuel adequately to see improvements in performance free from food rules and unrealistic body expectations.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
If you want to start a private practice, do it! It can be challenging starting and building up a client load, but you’ll get there sooner than you think. Take a business class or two! It will be worth your time.
