Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Del Bosque Fuentes.
Hi Sheila, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Havana, Cuba, and my musical journey began at the age of 9 when I started studying music. I was fortunate to have an incredible foundation as a flutist, thanks to the exceptional teachers and unwavering support from my family. Cuba is a country that serves as a beautiful and diverse musical laboratory, where different influences converge in a truly fascinating way. Throughout my career, I have delved into various musical realms.
As a soloist, I have immersed myself in the world of classical music, exploring chamber music and orchestral performances with renowned orchestras such as the Orchestra of Lyceum Mozartiano from Havana adjunct to Stiftung Mozarteum Salzburg, the National Orchestra of Cuba, and the Cuban European Youth Academy and Orchestra.
Additionally, I have had the privilege of delving into the realm of early music, exploring its rich heritage in Cuba, Latin America, and beyond through Ars Longa. Another significant experience that greatly shaped me was being part of the Habana Compas Dance Company. This opportunity allowed me to participate in festivals and concerts across Cuba, Mexico, and the US, performing for distinguished individuals such as Jill Biden, Usher, Bon Jovi, and The Rolling Stones.
However, I always felt a deep urge to push myself further and embrace new challenges. In 2018, I was fortunate to receive a full tuition scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music. There, I pursued a second undergraduate degree in Film Scoring and Performance, with a minor in Orchestral Conducting. Later on, I embarked on a master’s program in Jazz Performance through the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, once again benefiting from a full tuition scholarship.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Embarking on this musical path has not been without its challenges. The most significant hurdle I have encountered is transforming my mindset, as it allows me to continually adapt to new circumstances and grow as an artist. Flexibility, resilience, and courage have become guiding principles in my life. I believe in remaining open to new experiences, considering each situation as an opportunity for learning and personal development.
Being a musician is a remarkable journey, but it comes with its complexities. It requires the ability to juggle numerous projects simultaneously, taking on various roles such as performer, producer, social media promoter, and more. Despite the challenges, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be able to pursue my passion and share my love for music with audiences worldwide.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
During my time at Berklee, I founded the Sheila del Bosque Quartet, a musical band that strives to showcase a fresh perspective on Cuban music. Our approach blends classical music, African influences, jazz, and electronic elements, resulting in a unique sound. The quartet has performed in renowned halls and festivals such as the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey and the Celebrity Series of Boston.
Furthermore, I established my orchestra dedicated to promoting the works of living composers who are often underrepresented in concert hall programs. This initiative also aims to bring classical music to marginalized communities that lack access to live performances.
Currently, I am deeply involved in a project that challenges the stereotypes surrounding Cuban music. Through my compositions, I aim to present a fresh and honest perspective on my musical influences, while also addressing important social issues in my country, such as immigration, Eurocentrism, and freedom.
