Meet Alicia Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Adams.

Hi Alicia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
We started Alicia Adams Alpaca started in 2010 at our family farm in Millbrook, New York, where we had been breeding alpacas since 2005 after moving from Germany. During the annual shearing process, we realized that there was a surplus of alpaca wool and that we could create sustainable luxury goods using this natural fiber.

We started by making a few scarves and blankets, which quickly gained popularity due to their softness, warmth, and durability. We then began to expand our product line, creating a range of apparel and accessories for both men and women, all made from the finest alpaca wool. Today, Alicia Adams Alpaca has two brick-and-mortar locations and an online store, offering a wide selection of high-quality alpaca products.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Alpaca fiber was relatively unfamiliar to the mainstream market when we first started Alicia Adams Alpaca. This took double the effort to establish the brand and educate consumers about the unique qualities of alpaca wool.

Alpaca wool is a great material for both winter and spring seasons due to its warmth, breathability, and versatility, making it a home and closest staple that you only need to purchase once and will last for years to come. We are also involved in the sourcing of high-quality alpaca wool from South America, where we have established relationships with local communities that share their commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.

Our passion, perseverance, and commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship have helped us overcome these challenges. By staying true to our vision and adapting to the evolving demands of the industry, Alicia Adams Alpaca has emerged as a successful and reputable brand in the luxury alpaca fashion market.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Throughout the years, we have expanded our product offerings beyond blankets and throws to include apparel, accessories, and home decor items, showcasing the versatility and luxury of alpaca fiber. Our family farm is also the flagship location for Alicia Adams Alpaca. The farm has over 200 alpacas, and we are committed to sustainable and ethical practices, including using natural and renewable fibers and working with small farms to ensure the welfare of the animals.

Alpaca wool is a sustainable and eco-friendly material, as alpacas have a low environmental impact and produce high-quality wool without damaging the environment. It is also a strong and durable material that can withstand wear and tear, making it a good investment for long-lasting clothing and accessories.

In 2013, the Obamas gifted Prince George a Classic Herringbone Throw in ice blue and a Classic Herringbone Throw in hot pink for Princess Charlotte. This has since been on display in a royal exhibit inside Buckingham Palace. It was an honor to be given the opportunity to personally specialize these blankets for the Prince and Princess of Wales.

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
Giving back and family are the most important to me and are also deeply ingrained in Alicia Adams Alpaca’s values and ethos.

We’ve been fortunate to work with many charities and organizations that align with our company values, including Trees for the Future, Angels of Light, and the American Cancer Society. Our customers support our values and the causes we donate to. Thanks to them, we can continue to have a positive impact on the world and the people around us. In addition, we are committed to ethical and sustainable practices, working to support the livelihoods of small-scale farmers, and promoting environmentally responsible production methods.

Family is also at the heart of Alicia Adams Alpaca. When you work with the ones you love and trust, you can feel confident in your decisions and secure in your business relationships. Moving from Germany to New York to start Alicia Adams Alpaca was not a simple decision, but having the support of our family made it possible.
