Meet Sarah Key

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Key.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I never actually thought I could build a career in the travel world. Growing up, I was taught to pick a safe career path and stick to it my whole life. I went to college and got a degree in management and marketing because every company has marketing and management positions. With college graduation upon me, I still had no idea what I really wanted to do with my life, so I started applying to any and all jobs in marketing. I landed in the home building industry. I learned a lot in the first few years of “adulthood” and this career thankfully brought me out to Colorado from Wisconsin.

But there was still something always missing. My job never fully filled me up or 100% excited me. Being new to Denver, I started looking around and got involved in networking events to meet new people. This is where I learned about the world of entrepreneurship AND that entrepreneurship is a viable career path! I quickly became obsessed with entrepreneurship. I finally felt like I belonged. Except, I still didn’t know what I was meant to be doing.

Throughout this whole time, travel was always my number one priority. My husband and I traveled as much as our full-time jobs would allow (which luckily was a lot). After dabbling in multiple business opportunities and searching the internet far and wide, I met Kristi Huss who is the co-founder and co-owner of Travel Savvi, a travel agency. She shared with me what it would look like to become a travel agent. I figured I would give it a try. This was a year ago, and I can happily say I have found my calling. It brings me so much joy to be able to help couples go on their dream honeymoon, parents show their kids new cultures, and families spend quality time together away from home. I am here to help people travel more and stress less!

Along with being a travel agent with Travel Savvi, I have started my own blog The Keys to Travel to be able to share more travel stories with the world and inspire more couples and families to travel. I am also the organizer for the Denver Wanderful Chapter. Wanderful is a global sisterhood and community helping women travel the world. Travel is my passion, and I am thankful I have been able to build a career around something I love so much and share that passion with others.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not. Trying something new outside of what I’ve always known has been terrifying. Having a full-time job brings on a sense of security that can be very comforting. Going out on your own and being an entrepreneur has no guarantees. It is tough to listen to yourself and what you want when so many people are saying stick to the safe route. I have had daily internal struggles with myself on whether I’m taking the right steps, doing the right things, and if I’m good enough to make my dream a reality. But when you’re meant to be doing something and it is all you can think about, the world has a way of gently pushing you (or shoving you in my case!) to fulfill that dream!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a travel agent and a travel blogger. As a travel agent with Travel Savvi, I specialize in couples travel. I love working with couples on their destination wedding, honeymoon, anniversary trip, and any other vacations. I do everything from all-inclusive vacations to adventures on a safari to river cruises through Europe.

Many people either: 1. don’t know travel agents still exist or 2. wonder what the benefits are for working with a travel agent. Well, we do exist! And there are many benefits to working with a travel agent. We are here to make your travels go as seamlessly as possible from day one of planning to return home from vacation. I love that Travel Savvi’s sole focus is on the clients and giving them the best vacation they could hope for.

I also starting my own blog called The Keys to Travel. I travel so often and have so much knowledge to share that I needed one central location to house everything! I hope it is a place you can go to dream and get inspiration for your next vacation and help educate you on all different aspects of travel.

I am here too, to be a travel resource for people!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure I believe in luck in the business world. I believe mindset, hard work, and the way you treat others has a direct correlation to success. You can’t ‘luck’ into success. I can trace back to the beginning every step, fall and opportunity I took that got me to where I am today. Being able to see what I have done to get me to where I am made me feel like I have truly earned my success.

In life, I would say I’m damn lucky the world brought my husband and me together. He is my best friend, my travel partner, and who I want to experience this crazy life with. We were friends in high school but didn’t start dating until late into college. The funny thing is for four years we really weren’t in communication with each other until junior year of college when we both came home for Thanksgiving Break. Thank you to the Green Bay, Wisconsin Turkey Trot Race for somehow magically bringing us back together! I don’t know how I would have gotten to where I am today without my husband by my side.
