Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristian Mora.
Hi Cristian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I first discovered my love for art when I was a little kid growing up in Costa Rica. I experimented and painted a lot with acrylic paint, painting all sorts of landscapes and animals. However, It wasn’t until high school that my artistic path truly began to take shape.
A dedicated teacher introduced me to oil painting, giving me a set of oil paints. At that moment I had discovered a whole new world. The way oil paint behaved was so unfamiliar to me, but so fascinating at the same time. The feel of the brush in my hand, how the paint can be manipulated, the scent, and the endless possibilities of mixing colors ignited a deep sense of creativity.
After high school, I embarked on a diverse artistic journey. I explored airbrushing, tattooing, watercolors, music, digital painting, and more. Yet my journey took another turn, I returned to my first love, oil painting. The medium’s timeless allure pulled me back, allowing me to express my emotions, ideas, and experiences with the richness and depth that only oils could offer.
Today I stand as a practicing artist in Denver, CO and I’ve come full circle finding fulfillment in both, creating art and sharing my knowledge. I teach at the Art Students League of Denver, guiding aspiring artists in their creative journeys.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My art career has been a journey filled with both highs and lows.
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but that’s what makes it all the more rewarding. I’ve encountered various challenges along the way, from financial struggles to self-doubt and rejection. These experiences have tested my dedication and passion for art. However, they’ve also been invaluable lessons that have fueled my growth as an artist.
I’ve had to balance the demands of a day job(s) while pursuing my artistic dreams, which often meant late and even sleepless nights and weekends dedicated to my craft. Rejections from galleries and competitions have been tough, but they’ve taught me resilience and the importance of believing in my vision.
Each setback has ultimately led to breakthroughs in my work. So, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but the journey has shaped me as an artist and continues to motivate me to strive for excellence in my craft.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my artistic portfolio, I explore a wide spectrum of themes and styles, reflecting my multifaceted approach to art. One of my primary areas of focus is figure painting, where I attempt to capture the human form with precision and a deep appreciation for anatomy.
Landscape painting is another integral part of my body of work. I’m drawn to the vastness of nature and the changing scenes it offers. Whether it’s serene, sun-drenched landscapes or the bustling energy of urban settings, I aim to convey the mood and atmosphere of each place, allowing viewers to connect with the environments I depict.
I also have a passion for plein air painting, which allows me to immerse myself in the immediate beauty of the outdoors. These works are characterized by spontaneity and freshness, capturing the essence of a moment in time, and reflecting my deep connection with the natural world as I paint on location.
In addition to these genres, I delve into darker themes in my art, where I explore the depths of my inner emotions and thoughts. Through symbolic elements, evocative color palettes, and thought-provoking compositions, I offer viewers a glimpse into the complexities of the human experience, inviting them to engage with profound and introspective themes.
My artwork reflects my versatility as an artist, as I draw inspiration from various sources and styles to authentically express my creative vision and innermost feelings in a range of subjects and themes.
Networking and finding a mentor can have a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Attend Art Events. Frequent art exhibitions, gallery openings, workshops, and art-related events in your area. These gatherings are excellent opportunities to meet established artists and potential mentors.
Enroll in art classes or workshops at local art schools or studios. Often, instructors can provide mentorship or introduce you to artists in the field. Attend artist talks and demos. Many artists give talks or lectures about their work and experiences. Attend these events, and if possible, engage with the artist afterward to express your interest in mentorship.
When approaching a potential mentor, be prepared to showcase your dedication and passion for art. Share your portfolio, discuss your goals, and explain why you believe their mentorship would be beneficial to your artistic growth. Remember that mentors are often busy professionals. Be respectful of their time and availability. If they agree to mentor you, establish clear expectations and boundaries for the mentorship.
I’ve met many artists by joining art groups and participating in art-related activities. These connections have formed through shared interests and a common passion for art. It’s been a great way to network and build relationships with fellow artists.
