Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Hubbard.
Hi Erica, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After a traumatic divorce in Louisiana (where I am originally from), I moved to Colorado as a newly single mother of 2 (6 months and 3 years old). With an undergrad degree in biology and human medicine, I decided to become an EMT/first responder as a transitional career while I figured things out. During that time, I found myself extraordinarily good at meeting patients’ needs on an emotional trauma level.
I was often referred to as the EMT therapist. While someone was losing blood and needed to de-escalate to lower blood pressure, I was able to emotionally join them in their trauma and breathe with them, “talk them down” so to speak. I began to look into social work programs available virtually since I needed to also be home with my two small children. USC offered a prestigious program in which I entered the accelerated program. They set me up at an internship with an alumni of the program who worked in private practice in Westminster.
I worked with her for 2 years, while also becoming certified in Brainspotting (one of the if not THE most effective trauma intervention out there). I specialize in children youth and families, but focus mainly on adolescents and young adults in individual sessions. In 2019, I moved my practice to Boulder where I have been in private practice ever since. I am now happily remarried with a third child.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As mentioned previously, many life struggles including divorce, fear, financial hardship, and sole maternal responsibility have led me to a path of resilience and empowerment.
It’s often the case that movement in life requires discomfort, and through my academic education as well as life experience, I need to share with clients how much value there is in the struggle.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a licensed social worker specializing in children youth and families. I also am a trauma specialist providing multiple modalities including parts work and brainspotting. I work with adolescents, young adults, and adults going through all sorts of personal issues ranging from anxiety and depression to the effects of deep-rooted trauma.
I’m known for being extremely relatable and human. I pride myself on my authenticity and lead by example in that way to help clients find their authentic selves. I use a lot of psychoeducation in my sessions, which helps normalize our behavior as well as others, resulting in less shame.
Attachment theory is a common topic in my sessions as it helps us connect the dots between what we learned about love in childhood, and how we carry those schemas into adulthood. Again this provides normalization and understanding of why our patterns in relationships are the way they are, pointing us to new directions on how to change those patterns and find the love we deserve with intention.
