Meet Jessa Trefethen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessa Trefethen.

Jessa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story starts at the age of 18. Fresh out of high school and completely lost as to what my future looked like. My friend referred me to go check out the Paul Mitchell School in Colorado Springs. Within minutes of being in the building, I was sold. Unfortunately, my dream was a bit delayed due to the fact that I had little to no money for college or any secondary education. For the next year, I put any social life I had on hold and worked three jobs to save up enough to start school. I joined in January of 2010 and graduated in January of 2011. With a new found passion for educating, I was offered a position at the school as a teacher. I continued teaching for four years as well as being a full-time stylist at a brand new salon in Colorado Springs.

On November 11, 2011, Prodigy Salon was opened. I was a new stylist with no clientele at a brand new salon. With the love, support, and direction of the entire ownership group of Prodigy, I began to build a career for myself that allowed me to build amazing relationships with my fellow team as well as the guests in our salon. When I was asked to join the ownership side of Prodigy I have never felt so proud and honored. Today I work behind the chair with and help lead a talented team of artists who commit to furthering their education professionally and technically. I am still in shock of what has become of something that started so small and has now grown into a dream career.

When I’m not in the salon, I’m either behind the scenes working on an editorial shoot or traveling with an artistic team called the Beauty Underground founded by Charlie Price and Katie Nielsen. I have had the pleasure of working New York Fashion Week, 5 seasons of Denver Fashion Week, 2 seasons of Hair Lead for DFW, the International Hairdressing Awards in Madrid, Spain, and many other adventures around the United States.

It’s been a crazy 8 1/2 years and I have no intention of slowing down. 🙂

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In my opinion, no great story has ever been created without obstacles and challenges. They are what help us push to the next level, without difficulty there would be no growth. There have been too many to name but I’d say the biggest one is internal conflict and learning to trust yourself and KNOW your vision.

Please tell us about Jessa Trefethen/Prodigy Salon.
I think Prodigy Salon is different in our team salon environment. We believe in shared success and creating an experience for our guests that they can’t get anywhere else. For our stylists, we take great pride in allowing them to be themselves while encouraging the whole team to grow into their best self personally/professionally. Balance is Key. I’m inspired at Prodigy, to be better, to learn more, and to continue to help others reach their career goals.

I am the artistic director(in charge of team photo shoots) the education leader (teaches new prodigies in a class all technical skills) and team leader/co-owner.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Everything has happened the way it was intended to get me to the point where I’m at now. I wouldn’t necessarily do anything different except to tell myself to breathe and trust the vision and process more.
