Conversations with the Inspiring Kaytlin Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaytlin Brown.

Kaytlin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been fortunate enough to know from the moment I graduated high school that I wanted to pursue a career helping people rehabilitate and heal. The human body is utterly fascinating. There’s so much that we still don’t know but my favorite part of what we do know is that it is resilient and incredible when it comes to knowing how to heal itself. That fascination led me down the path of receiving my Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science and then on to a program for Clinical Massage Therapy, which I have now been practicing for the last seven years.

Aside from my education and passion for the body, I was also raised by entrepreneurs/small business owners. My parents work ethic, drive and success throughout my life made me realize it’s possible to do my own thing, to be my own boss and create exactly what I see for myself. Watching and helping them to run their businesses instilled in me the want for the same success. So, I guess you could say I’ve been an entrepreneur all of my life, it’s in my blood!

Combine these two parts of my life and you have where I am today! As I mentioned, I’ve been practicing for the past seven years. The last three of those I’ve been lucky enough to have my own practice, Take Care Therapeutics. Over the years, I’ve taken my experience and education and built a space focused on treating the body as a whole. The main treatment is, of course, a more therapeutic style of bodywork but I have recently implemented programs to dive deeper to the root and the true cause of peoples physical pain. Those programs include a combination of alternative therapies, nutrition/lifestyle support, supplementation education, mindfulness, meditation and an open line of communication regarding overall health goals. Physical and mental wellness are equally as important in order for us to lead the thriving lives we deserve. If I have access to the resources, education, and ability to support people on a journey to find optimal health, in a more natural, alternative way, that’s what I’m going to do for whoever is in need.

I believe we are at a critical time in our world where it is becoming normal speaking openly about health issues that might have been more taboo in the past, like depression and anxiety. The work I do with my clients can play a massive role in addressing not only physical ailments such as injuries or post-surgical rehabilitation but mental wellness issues as well. One of the best resources I have to offer is that of the programs and products created by a mental wellness company who’s leading the way in the mental wellness realm by normalizing the conversation around mental wellness and creating ways to naturally approach healing. Partnering with them has been a game changer for my business as well as the results my client is seeing. Coupling their regimens with regular bodywork, accountability, and support is leading to improvements in how my clients react to stress, their moods, health issues they’ve struggled with for years and most importantly their pain management ability. All of this means more sustainable results! It’s truly remarkable and I couldn’t ask to be in a part of a more exciting time in the world as a health care provider.

On a personal note, I’ve lived in Denver for four years now with my husband and we are expecting our first kiddo at the end of July! I thoroughly enjoy networking, especially with other influential, powerful women in the Denver area. I also host a few different groups geared towards creating a supportive space for moms and moms to be to find connection during one of the hardest, craziest times in their lives when many tend to suffer. Being/becoming a mother is BIG, and we aren’t meant to do big things along. Being able to support my clients, friends, and family with the same care I support my own health with, especially through this pregnancy, has truly been a dream come true and I look forward to continuing to help anyone who is looking for a more alternative approach to their health and wellness.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think one of the biggest challenges in branching out on your own is taking that initial leap. There’s a quote I love and reference a lot when it comes to becoming an entrepreneur, “leap and the net will appear.” There are a lot of moving parts to starting a business of any sort, ranging from finances to finding the right space to marketing and building a clientele. I was very lucky to have incredible support from family and friends. I was able to learn from them and lean on them but ultimately I just had to jump! Since then, every day has been a journey. I’m not sure the learning process will every stop.

One struggle I’ve had is understanding that I have more than one hat to wear now. I am no longer just the practitioner but also the business owner/manager. I can’t just go to work, see my clients and then head home. There’s a whole other world that involves budgeting, scheduling, marketing, etc. that has to be addressed in order to keep a business going. Finding a balance between the two can be difficult but is totally possible.

My biggest piece of advice for women starting the entrepreneur journey is to not go it alone. Find successful people in your field and learn from them. Ask questions to any entrepreneurs who will give you the time of day and don’t ever be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help won’t make you seem weak or unable, it’s incredibly smart and could even be the difference between success and failure. Make a plan, get support, get excited and then go for it, leap and trust that everything you’ve created up until that point will help to catch you! That’s the hardest part, once you’ve done that then find ways to build a network of other professionals who will support you and help get the word out about whatever it is that you’re doing. Word of mouth, no matter the field, is one of the best ways to grow and sustain success in business.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Take Care Therapeutics story. Tell us more about it.
Primarily the focus of Taking Care Therapeutics is bodywork in the form of deep, therapeutic massage. That’s what my reputation has been built on. Servicing all types of people from the typical Colorado weekend warrior to elite athletes to people rehabbing from injury or surgery.

I’m most proud of the reputation I’ve built in the short three years I’ve been running my practice. I have clients who have been coming to see me regularly for nearly the entire time. In my field, in particular, repeat business is the bread and butter, what pays the bills. Aside from that, I am very lucky to also have built relationships with all of these people. As a therapist, I learn a lot about what’s going on in my clients lives outside of just their physical ailments. I know what’s going on in their lives (family, kids, travel, work, etc.) which I believe gives me an even better understanding of what is causing their pains and enables me to offer other ways to prevent further issues.

What sets me apart from most Licensed Massage Therapists is my education as well as my approach to mental wellness issues through bodywork. Though it’s becoming more common, not many LMT’s holds a bachelors degree. Most come right out of high school or pursue massage as a second career later in life. As far as the approach to mental wellness, I mentioned earlier how integral it is to our overall health. I’m proud to be a part of a huge movement of practitioners adopting this approach. To be at the forefront of something like this definitely sets me apart from other massage therapists.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I am a part of a BNI Chapter. When it comes to my business, this has been hands down the best way to grow authentically without having to fork over tons of money for advertising and marketing campaigns. The group professionals I meet with weekly knows me, my work and my business so when they are out and about I am the first person on their mind when they meet someone they believe could use my help.

Finding a solid lead or referral group such as this is important. As well as putting yourself out there and going to other social and professional meet up groups. As far as finding a mentor, these types of getting together’s are probably the best way to find someone to get guidance from.
