Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Rose.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born into a family of artists and grew up in Philadelphia and Maine. I received my BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and completed their European Honors Program in Rome.
While in art school, I loved summer jobs on trail crews in New England and got into wildland firefighting. I landed a job in Durango with the San Juan Hotshots. Five months into the job, I was fired and met my current husband the same week. My massive spiritual awakening also began that week!
Twenty years later, we have two teenage boys and happily live surrounded by nature in Crestone. We lived in Durango for twelve years and now Crestone for eight. In Durango, I helped start a Life Drawing group and was the organizer for several years. I am the head organizer now for the group we started here in Crestone.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I was fired from firefighting, I was kicked out of the housing with nowhere to go. Luckily, the guy who took me in, whom I had met only 2 days prior, turned out to be my awesome husband of 20 years!
Discovering the corruption in the art world has not been easy. But I’d rather not discuss that!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a figurative painter, I have painted from live models often and have rendered many self-portraits. My newer oil paintings are painted from photos but with countless hours of live model charcoal drawing and oil painting practice.
My favorite “gallery” to be represented by is Mother Nature. I hang my oil paintings in trees throughout the vibrant seasons of Colorado and then document the “art exhibition” with photography and video.
Besides outdoors, I have exhibited in galleries such as A Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Durango Arts Center, Durango, Colorado, and the Centro Cultural, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Compassion and empathy.
