Life & Work with Julie Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Harris.

Julie Harris

Hi Julie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a photographer since I was 7 after my Dad got me my first camera–that was back in 1985. I quickly became our family’s photographer and took my camera everywhere. I was–and still am, obsessed with taking pictures. I launched Julie Harris Photography in 2003 after receiving a BFA from CU Boulder.

This was before digital photography was as accessible as it is today. I was shooting film, and there weren’t many photographers in the area at that time–and the internet was still relatively young. I really lucked out and built up a clientele rather quickly. It’s crazy–I am still working with some of my very first clients 21 years later. I love that about my job.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been so many changes within the industry since I started in 2003—the pivot from film to digital photography, Internet marketing, social media, and a massive influx of wedding and portrait photographers into the industry has really made the marketplace much more competitive than it used to be.

When I started, I kind of knew everyone in the Colorado market if not personally, then by name. So keeping up with the latest and greatest has been important while simultaneously staying true to my unique voice as an artist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I photograph the human condition. My style is not about being perfect and pretty but speaks more to authenticity. I am interested in being present with my clients and capturing those tiny little moments we often overlook. We can find so much beauty in the normal “day-to-day” breadth of existence. I want people to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
I’m the oldest of 4. Every Thanksgiving my family would pile into our van and drive from Colorado to Arkansas to visit my grandparents. We would stop at a hotel on the way, and a hotel on the way home and swim in the pool, get ice and cokes from the vending machines, watch movies in our hotel room, etc. It was the best bonding time for me and my siblings–especially when we got older.
