Hidden Gems: Meet Jennifer Henderson of Tilt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Henderson

Hi Jennifer , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a professional mom with 2 small children, I experienced career stagnation and pregnancy discrimination when I disclosed both of my pregnancies. My employers simply didn’t know what to do with me, or women like me, to maintain career growth with pregnancy and young children. The penalty of motherhood that women incur to ‘choose’ between their career or staying at home with children is antiquated, short-sighted, and shuts out an immense talent pool that is more educated, experienced and driven than ever before in history. So I set off on my own and founded Tilt in 2017 to revolutionize leave of absence, the epicenter of this phenomenon, in the workplace.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What I have learned in the past 7 years of building a company would have taken me 17 years in corporate America to learn. Every stage of maturation has brought new challenges, required skills, and ways of thinking as a leader. I often say that my ability to deal with ambiguity was something I thought to be a strength in past roles- but truly I didn’t know what ambiguity was until I became a founder. There have been far too many ups and downs to mention but the visceral connection and fire in my belly to make leave better helps me get up after every knock down.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Tilt is leading the charge in all things leave of absence management through easy-to-use tech and human touch. Since 2017, our proprietary platform and Empathy Warriors have been helping customers make leave not suck by eliminating administrative burdens, keeping companies compliant, and providing a truly positive and supportive leave of absence experience for their people. Tilt makes navigating critical life moments easy with our tech, and more human with our hearts. This means you can leave the leave management to us for a best-in-class experience for you and your people.

It’s time to bring humanity to leave of absence.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The HR tech, benefits, and LOA space is incredibly dynamic right now. Shifting legislation, social pressures, and employee sentiment have all given tremendous velocity to a groundswell of change. In the next 5-10 years I predict that the gig economy will continue to grow, workers holding more ‘tour of duty’ roles will become a norm, and employers will be increasingly responsible for operating more as a partner with their employees, as opposed to the current power imbalance.
