Meet Shelby Kaminski of Edaphic Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Kaminski.

Shelby Kaminski

Hi Shelby, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I made a big move from the suburbs of Detroit to Boulder to attend the University of Colorado. Majoring in Environmental Studies was a dream come true, I have always felt that nature is my passion. During my four years there, I soaked up knowledge and fell in love with the landscapes of Boulder. During school in 2015, I took a permaculture design course that completely blew my mind. Learning about different plant species and their intricate roles on this earth was eye-opening. It made me realize we can’t live without these incredible plants, and I became passionate about sharing this with everyone I could. As my journey continued, I discovered that soil isn’t just dirt—it’s a living, breathing organism, a hidden galaxy under our feet that keeps us all alive. This ignited a spark in me to create Edaphic Solutions, where we provide real soil solutions to the community. We help homeowners and landowners manage their plants and soils using natural methods. Since 2016, we’ve been brewing and applying compost tea to enrich the soil. In 2022, we added steam weeding to our services, providing an eco-friendly method for weed control. We are growing more and more each season!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a young female business owner in a male-dominated field like landscaping and land management has certainly been an experience. Mostly an empowering one. One of the unique aspects of our work at Edaphic Solutions is reintroducing age-old methods like compost tea and steam weeding into the modern world. These aren’t new techniques; our ancestors used them long before us. Ever heard of putting boiling water on a plant to kill it? That’s steam weeding in its simplest form!

These methods are a nod to how our ancestors cared for the land, but applying them today can be unconventional. They require a bit of awareness and education to make people realize their existence and benefits. There’s definitely a learning curve, but that’s one of the most enjoyable parts of this job—educating people about the intricate relationships between plants, soil, and sustainable practices. Watching people connect with these natural methods and seeing the positive impact on their land is incredibly rewarding.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Edaphic Solutions?
At Edaphic Solutions, we specialize in eco-friendly land management, promoting soil health and sustainable plant growth. Our services include brewing compost tea and steam weeding, offering natural alternatives to chemical fertilizers and weed killers.

We’re proud of our unique methods, and our role in educating the community about sustainable solutions. We serve not only homeowners but also large-scale projects like farms and commercial properties.

Our goal is to foster healthier ecosystems and grow healthy soil now as well as for future generations! There is a lot we can be doing now.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Denver is a vibrant and growing city. The best part is the people—their passion and big hearts make this city feel so welcoming. I love how many incredible farmers and land tenders are creating more green spaces while the city continues to grow. We could always use more urban farms.
