Hidden Gems: Meet Valerie Lam of TrueMind Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Lam

Hi Valerie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up with Chinese Medicine and acupuncture so it was always part of my plan but it was going to be after med school. Later experiences helped me decide that Western medicine was the not the path for me and I applied to Chinese Medicine school. I bought Truemind Center last summer. TrueMind Center has been part of the Cherry Creek community for over two decades and I have the honor of continuing to provide holistic healing for those in need along with my talented team.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is always smooth, there are always bumps along the way. The road to get here began with my grandma’s sudden deterioration in health and soon after my grandpa’s too. When I first applied for Chinese Medicine school, my family was not initially super supportive because they didn’t understand why I wanted to become a Chinese Medicine doctor instead of a medical doctor. Then came COVID and the struggles of getting licensed and finding a job during the pandemic. Venturing out to open my own practice took a lot of work and mental preparation as well as the challenges of learning to be a business owner. The biggest decision I made and the one that required the most courage was buying this practice (TrueMind Center) at the time. I know there will be more bumps in the road but I also believe determination and teamwork can overcome these bumps.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about TrueMind Center?
TrueMind Center has stood as a locally owned business in Cherry Creek for over 20 years. Our clinic is known for its unique and traditional atmosphere, truly one of a kind in the area. TrueMind‘s reputation is one of authenticity and excellence in the traditional Chinese medicine field. This is due to our extensive range of treatment options, including a full herbal pharmacy and a variety of Chinese medicine modalities.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Expect a learning curve when you go out into the real world because formal education does not prepare you for all the complexities of life and practice. Expect to make mistakes and just remember to learn from them. Give yourself a little grace and don’t dwell on every little mistake you make because those mistakes are valuable lessons to get you where you need to be.
