Today we’d like to introduce you to John Redmon.
Hi John, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Biography of John Redmon
John Redmon was born in Kirchheimbolanden, Germany, to a military father serving in the Army and a native German mother. During early childhood, John’s family relocated to the United States, settling in the South. Growing up in Arkansas, specifically Memphis, Tennessee, John faced numerous challenges adapting to his new environment. The stark cultural differences, language barriers, and encounters with racial biases led him to question his identity during his formative years.
Struggling to connect with his peers due to bullying and the need for speech lessons to learn English, John found solace and guidance in the unwavering support of his grandparents, Geneva and Jim. Rooted in Southern, hardworking values, Geneva, a dedicated Sunday school teacher, and Jim, a respected deacon, instilled in John the importance of love, family, and faith. It was within the nurturing environment of their church community that John’s passion for drawing began to flourish. Starting with simple sketches of “Jesus fish” and basic figures, his artistic skills evolved rapidly, capturing the attention and admiration of both his church community and school peers who frequently requested his artwork.
John’s journey into tattoo artistry was significantly influenced by his college friends, whose consistent support and encouragement fueled his artistic ambitions. While attending Arkansas State University with aspirations of playing basketball and earning a degree, financial constraints led John to explore alternative career paths. Venturing into tattooing, he discovered a passion that would soon define his professional journey.
From doodling on paper to decorating shoes and wooden surfaces, John’s creative expression knew no bounds. His friends’ steadfast belief in his potential inspired him to pursue tattoo artistry seriously. Despite initial struggles, John remained dedicated to mastering his craft, undertaking a traditional two-year apprenticeship under the mentorship of Doug Mac at Dragon Works Tattoo in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Achieving his dream of becoming a professional tattoo artist, John began his career specializing in traditional tattoos. Over time, he expanded his repertoire to include realism, fine line work, and a variety of other diverse tattoo styles. His artistic journey has taken him across several states, including Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, and currently, Colorado. In each place, John continues to hone his craft, sharing his passion and exceptional talent through his tattoo artistry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not always. Of course, you have to build a portfolio and clientele base. Being new to an industry like this, you have to apply pressure and feel uncomfortable to become better. I still learn new techniques and ways of utilizing the needle to this day. It’s a lifestyle that requires a strong desire.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for my blackwork and fine line tattoo styles. My passion leans towards creating realistic interpretations, particularly in larger-scale pieces that showcase the depth of Realism. However, I strive to maintain versatility in my craft, ensuring that I don’t confine myself to a single style or approach, allowing for continuous growth and creative exploration.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Feel free to reach out to me on any of my social media platforms, send me an email, or even drop by the shop to say hello or book a consultation. I may not be the best fit for everyone’s tattoo style, but I can definitely introduce you to an artist who’s a perfect match for you!
