Today we’d like to introduce you to Katerina Rothman.
Katerina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The prime years of my youth were spent in clubs, masterfully dancing all night long with occasionally broken heels and a vague memory of events. Meanwhile, I was a part-time college student and had an office job from 9 to 6 administrating and establishing processes. While confetti and disco balls attracted me much more than anything else, I knew right then and there that this ‘celebration of life’ won’t last long and living from paycheck to paycheck was becoming more and more unbearable.
That was the moment I realized that I should start my own business: earn as much as you want, work when you want, party as much as you want – just do what you love. I wish it would be as easy to implement as setting my mind to it.
Forward 12 years, tons of thoughts and reflections, finally all pieces of my puzzle came together: my daughter was born, I had no desire to go back to work and miss her growing up, a friend with an amazing resource called and that was the beginning of Beflax Linen – natural linen shop with the focus on home goods.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I honestly don’t think the path of a small business is ever smooth. And Beflax Linen was no exception here. Struggles were everywhere, as the initial company budget consisted of just some savings, and outsourcing to a professional was not an option. Probably the easiest thing to do was to set up LLC and put together the website, the hard part was to drive sales.
I’d say if you want to learn a lot of things in a short time, start a business – inevitably you will learn a LOT!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beflax Linen – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My passion for all things natural and organic lead me to learn about what a fantastic material Linen fabric is. Linen comes from a flax plant, which makes it one of the most natural and breathable textiles there is. It is five times stronger than cotton, it’s sustainable and eco-friendly, and has thermoregulating characteristics (will cool you down when it’s hot, will keep you warm when it’s cold outside). The only problem is the high cost of this amazing fabric – and I wanted to fix that!
Beflax Linen was born at the beginning of 2016 in Denver, CO, and launched the e-commerce store in December 2017. Our goal is to provide families with the best quality natural linen at affordable prices. With the focus on home goods, our best product line yet is the Linen Bedding collection.
Sleeping on pure linen can definitely improve your sleep and overall fatigue levels, give you a micro-massage at night and protect sensitive skin from irritation. As a result, you’ll wake up more rejuvenated and refreshed.
We now offer bedding sets in Queen and King sizes and are working on a new bedding collection that will also include Twin size.
Apart from our attractive price point, Beflax Linen stands strong behind the ecology aspect, so all our packaging is fully recyclable and doesn’t contain any plastic.
I certainly plan to grow this company by creating more linen pieces for everyday life.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Looking at the world today, I believe we all will turn towards more natural products in our everyday life with a focus on sustainability and recyclability. With that in mind, the demand for natural linen should grow even higher than it is today, as more and more people will get educated on the subject. In my opinion, there is nothing that will prevent this industry to grow unless we manage to pollute our planet to the extent where sunlight will not get through and the soil will stop producing plants. Fingers crossed that won’t take place in the next 5-10 years, or ever.
Currently, the bedsheets market is exploring new fabrics and technologies in order to preserve the natural aspect and keep the cost low at the same time. A great example of those is bamboo or eucalyptus sheets. Both natural, both have thermoregulating characteristics, and both feel very soft and nice. Unfortunately, after conducting a lot of research, we realized that the production process of both bamboo and eucalyptus sheets contributes to an adverse impact on the environment. It requires milling down the actual tree and then several stages of using chemical solvents to dissolve the structure and then later turn to a thread, as a result, some bamboo fabric showed less than 2% of the actual bamboo composition. Not so ‘natural’ fabric at the end of the day.
We at Beflax came to the conclusion that nothing beats linen, it’s health benefits and it’s eco-friendliness.
