Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Elif Kuzu, DAOM.
Hi Dr. Elif, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since I was a little girl I have always felt that I would become a Doctor. I loved helping folks in need and thought it would be the greatest gift from the higher source to be able to change peoples lives. At the age of sixteen I started my journey in the medical field, helping in hospitals as a volunteer and working in private medical clinics. It was at the age of twenty I saw my first two deaths in a row while working in the ER which caused so much heart ache for me personally but everyone around was pretty numb. At that moment I thought twice about becoming a Doctor. I didn’t really understand how healthcare providers in medicine could just be so cold to death. But I was the new person and these were Doctors who had been in practice for years. So I continued my journey. Kept working in the hospital and private medical clinics till I personally became ill myself. The Doctor I was working with had no idea what was wrong with me. Here I thought western medicine surely could fix me but was confused on why the Doctor I looked up to and worked for could not. He diagnosed me with a new disease at that time called IBS and said there was no medicine or cure for it. Not enough research was done on this illness. He prescribed several different medications as a trail but none worked and actually made me worse. I was so constipated all the time, it was so bad that it plugged me up into my ribs which he saw on the X-rays, wild right. I eventually decided to take matters into my own hands. I changed my diet to all raw foods thinking this might help my digestive system not knowning things would only get worse. Western medicine knowledge couldn’t grasp why this was happening. I ended up doing tons of research on my own as I do like to explore outside of the box and found out about Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. I really did not know how it worked but decided to visit the student clinic to get more information. Upon my appointment I assumed they couldn’t fix or treat IBS so I told them about my arm pain that I had for 6 months as most people know that acupuncture works for pain. They literally bleed the tip of my finger and just like that my pain disappeared! I was shocked! I couldn’t believe or even understand what just happened especially since my entire life I had been studying western medicine. The practitioner explained to me how Chinese medicine works and this is where my real journey begins……
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My family is very much programmed to believe western medicine is elite like most of the world so it was difficult to convince them that eastern medicine is actually one of the oldest and most effective medicine. It took some struggles to convince my family to allow me to switch my path and move so far away to study something that was very much not known to them. But with force and being the rebellious person I am lol I started a whole different journey, a journey that changed my entire life, view points, and my family’s lives as well..
