Check Out Alissa Mills’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alissa Mills.

Hi Alissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The story of Empow3r didn’t begin with a business plan, it began with a shared belief in what movement can do for a person’s life: mentally, emotionally, physically, and socially.

Both Alissa and Scott have been connected to fitness for most of their lives, though in different ways. For Alissa, movement became a way to return to her body, build steadiness, and feel strong again. For Scott, movement has always been a source of clarity, challenge, and growth – from climbing all of Colorado’s 14ers, to cycling, rugby, and military service.

Professionally, they each built meaningful careers:
Alissa as an educator, deeply invested in her students and the sense of community she built in the classroom.
Scott spent years in the tech and government sectors before moving into the fitness industry, where he found purpose helping people build confidence in their capabilities.

But when they got engaged, they found themselves at a crossroads.

Alissa loved teaching, but the system was draining — the politics, the pace, and the constant output with little room to refill. She wanted to continue creating community, using her strengths, but in a way that allowed for balance, autonomy, and ownership. Scott loved coaching and supporting others through movement, but working for others limited his ability to lead with the philosophies he believed in most deeply. He wanted to build something that allowed him to create freely – something he could shape, refine, and invest in with full purpose.

So they asked themselves what kind of life they wanted to build — not just personally, but professionally.

And they realized the answer had been sitting with them for years:
Create the space they had always wished existed.

A place where strength and softness are equally valued.
Where fitness and yoga are not opposing worlds, but complementary ones.
Where movement is approached with intention — not intensity for the sake of intensity.
And where community is the heartbeat — not an afterthought.
They combined their strengths: Scott’s depth of knowledge in training and human performance, and Alissa’s background in education, communication, and culture-building – and Empow3r came to life.

Empow3r is more than a gym or a yoga studio.
It is a community home.
A place where people feel seen, supported, and encouraged to grow in ways that matter to them.

It’s the dream they finally said yes to, and one that continues to be shaped every day by the people who walk through its doors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? No, not exactly. But it has been meaningful. It has been full of growth. And it has been ours.

One of the biggest lessons has been time. We have more ideas than any one schedule could ever hold — events we want to host, programs we want to launch, equipment we want to bring in, experiences we want to create. But with just the two of us leading, coaching, planning, and operating the business, we’ve had to learn how to pace ourselves. To trust that not everything has to happen at once. To allow things to unfold in their right season.

Then there’s the learning curve of running a business.
Social media, website design, email communication, booking platforms, invoicing, billing, scheduling, business law — there is so much behind-the-scenes work that no one prepares you for. We knew there would be a lot involved, but we don’t think either of us understood the amount of time those pieces require. Especially social media — wow. And with social media comes a unique emotional challenge: the pull to compare. Learning to stay rooted in our mission and not measure our progress against anyone else’s has been a real and meaningful part of the journey.

A unique and beautiful challenge has been nurturing our yoga studio (Empow3r Yoga) as its own identity while still remaining deeply connected to the Empow3r brand. Yoga has its own culture, energy, and rhythm. We wanted it to feel like a sanctuary, not just an extension of the gym (Empow3r Fitness) downstairs, while still aligning with our values of community, empowerment, and whole-person wellness. Creating and communicating that distinction has taken time, and we’re still shaping it thoughtfully.

But through every bump, what has remained constant is our gratitude. Our community has been incredible. The people who show up here – to lift, to move, to breathe, to grow — are what make the journey not just worthwhile, but beautiful.

So no, the road hasn’t been perfectly smooth. But it has been rich in purpose, full of lessons, and deeply fulfilling. And we are just getting started.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Empow3r is a community-centered fitness and yoga studio built around three pillars: Fitness, Wellness, and Community. We offer small-group fitness classes, personal training, open gym, and a full yoga studio, along with supportive services like body composition analysis, metabolic testing, recovery equipment (normatec therapy & massage chairs), chiropractic and massage therapy, and nutrition, hormone support, and meal service partnerships — all under one roof.

What we’re most proud of is the feeling people experience when they come here. Our trainers and yoga teachers are relatable, supportive, and attentive to each person’s unique needs, and our spaces are intentionally designed without mirrors so people can tune into how they feel, not how they look. This helps remove comparison, judgment, and pressure, and instead encourages mindfulness, confidence, internal strength, and a deeper connection to movement. The environment feels welcoming, grounded, and free from the intimidation that can come with typical gym culture. We care deeply about thoughtful programming, personal attention, cleanliness, and creating a place where every person feels seen and valued.

We also put intention into how we tell our story online. Our social media (@empow3rfitness and @empow3ryoga) is thoughtful, real, and human — and people often tell us that it feels honest and relatable, which means a lot to us.

What sets us apart is our holistic, heart-forward approach. We don’t just focus on workouts — we focus on whole health and genuine belonging. Empow3r is a place where people feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to grow at their own pace.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, we see the industry continuing to move away from the “more is better” mentality. There’s been a clear shift toward intentional, strength-based training, especially for adults in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. People are recognizing that muscle is essential for longevity, metabolic health, bone density, hormone balance, and overall quality of life — not just aesthetics.

We’re also seeing less emphasis on high-intensity, high-stress training as the default. Less constant HIIT, less pressure for long cardio sessions, and more smart programming — lifting challenging weights, progressing intentionally, and incorporating conditioning that supports the nervous system. And importantly, we’re seeing core training reframed, not as endless crunches, but as training the entire trunk for stability, posture, balance, and functional strength.

Nutrition is evolving too, especially the understanding around adequate protein, creatine, and fueling to match training goals. People are learning how nourishment supports strength, recovery, and emotional well-being.

And there’s a major shift toward mobility and recovery. Rest, breathwork, joint health, balance training, and nervous system regulation are becoming recognized as foundational to aging well. The industry is moving away from burnout culture and toward sustainable, whole-person wellness, which is exactly what we believe in.

In short, the future includes smarter training, stronger cores, better recovery, and whole-body health — and Empow3r is intentionally aligned with that direction.
