Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Mcdonald.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Stacy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I live in the area and was practicing at the studio when they asked for help in negotiating their lease (I’m in real estate so they presumed I’d know how to do that, but I don’t any more than the next guy). I came back to them with a prime offer from the landlord but one of the owners asked me, “do you just want to own it?”…. which was the craziest ass thing I’d ever heard, but I didn’t want to not have a yoga studio five blocks from my house, so I bought her out. We had 15 classes a week and five teachers, now we have 28 classes a week, 50+ teachers.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
OMG… there are still struggles. I always say, the thing that makes us great at yoga makes us suck at technology. I’m still the only person that doesn’t get paid, so while the studio has a “community” feel, it’s probably because it is a labor of love for me… and that’s why we keep the doors open.
Let’s talk about business. Tell us about ELEVATE YOGA – what should we know?
We are a little neighborhood yoga studio in East Denver. We are welcoming beyond BEYOND! We don’t care if you come in your jeans or cargo pants, we have Adaptive classes for folks with physical challenges that can adapt any pose to everybody. We have young people, old people, folks of all shapes, sizes, gender identifications, religions, cultures… we are just there to help folks undo all of the stressors that life gives.
We also have an ongoing monthly class, Yomassage ™, that is limited to six participants per class. The facilitators, one licensed massage therapist, the other a yoga instructor, give hands on massage, adjustments and reflexology for 105 minutes of bliss. We have worked hard to make this the most blissful experience.
Twice a month, we have live musicians come provide ambient accompaniment to some of our relaxing drop in classes.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The original studio owners were Morgan Seibel and Natalie Tafoya. They were the ones with the original vision and laid the groundwork. And members of our community; Karla Kyte, Lolly Block, Stacy Decker, Christina Sloan, Carol O’Dwyer, Emily Litt, Jaishree Arora, Heideh Kabir… honestly, too many to mention. I know I’m not naming them all and will be embarrassed when I’m reminded, but all of the members of our community that spread the word, and then so warmly welcome in new students… those are the folks that make this community sweet and strong.
