Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Snead.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Candi’s Crafts in 2016, in my parent’s basement. I was going through a difficult time in my life. I was struggling with multiple health problems that prevented me from working and also made it almost impossible to leave the house, I have always been a very creative and imaginative soul who has always kept a positive outlook on the world. I am constantly searching for the light; much like a sunflower growing and reaching towards the sun. So, instead of feeling trapped in that dark place I started using my time, energy and passion towards making beautiful works of art.
I started modeling just a few short months ago, on April 2019. I found myself, once again, facing scary hardships surrounding my health. I truly believe sometimes it takes almost completely losing yourself to find out who you truly are. I believe that is what this year has taught me. This time, coming out of my dark place, the world seems bigger, brighter and more inviting to change. For that reason and many others, I started modeling as a platform to show the world how our differences make us beautiful and wonderful.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth having comes easily, unfortunately. Your road to success will be littered with heartbreak, rejection, and setbacks. Trying to get Candi’s Crafts up and running in a small town in West Virginia was almost impossible. I spent months attending little church craft fairs or any type of event I could find to promote my business. Unfortunately, the items I was selling (festival wear, cannabis, and bohemian items) paired with my look (a bright blue-haired girl with tattoos and piercings), no one would even come up to my booth at most events. I persisted even in my little town and ended up not only gathering a large online following, but Candi’s Crafts was officially in stores! I ended up with my hemp wick lighters in a few tobacco shops in the area. I ultimately realized that to grow my business further, I would have to make a move to a big city like Denver.
As for my modeling, it was born from a rough road and lots of struggles and pain in life. I reached a point in my mental health struggles this year where I wasn’t sure if I would be here today or not. I was dealing with some real lows, and my support system at the time was limited. My family lives on the East Coast as well as most of my close friends. My “friends” here decided my health complications were too much for them. My long term boyfriend, Austin was a huge help and made me get to where I am today. But ultimately, I did it. I got help. I started new treatment plans. I stopped hiding from the world. I decided to use my modeling as a platform. I put in the work and continue to every day. And honestly, that’s the true key to success- perseverance.
What should we know about Cannabis Candi/Candi’s Crafts? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Candi’s Crafts is a business built of passion and positive energy. It’s a bohemian craft shop with really cool items for festivals, tons of cannabis accessories and honestly whatever fun cute ideas come to my brain. Customer service is very important to me and I think that helps set me apart I know it sounds cheesy but I don’t want to just run a business I want to connect with people and show them love and light with my creations.
My modeling is unique in the way that I don’t try and hide my “flaws”, I embrace them. I am modeling to show the world that it is time for a change with the body positive movement. I think the more exposure I get the more people will hopefully be inspired to feel more free and confident in their own lives.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
The best advice I can give you is to use social media to your advantage. Search in your area for like-minded people to meet up with and brainstorm ways to grow your business. Support breeds support. Support your other local artists and small business owners and that will help you build loyal connections. Network network network! Your effervescent personality mixed with hard work will take you where you need to go if you just do not give up!
