Meet Christian Seale of Southeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Seale.

Christian , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up neglected and impoverished, I experienced first-hand the effects that government can have in our everyday lives. As a child and teenager, I experienced homelessness and poverty. Before finding myself in foster care, I often struggled to know when I was going to eat next or where I would sleep at night. When my foster family took me in and gave me a better life, I knew I had the opportunity to make a difference and I wasn’t going to throw it away. In the richest nation in world history, no child should have to starve or sleep outside at night, the way I did. So, I entered politics and made ending child poverty my mission. I had a brief start in Phoenix before moving to Colorado Springs at eighteen. After getting settled in, I worked for the Colorado Immigrant Right Coalition before being recruited into Democratic Party politics. Within a few months, I was made Chair of The El Paso County Young Democrats and not long after that, Vice Chair of Electoral Organizing for the Colorado Young Democrats. During my tenure, I helped to elect numerous Democrats to the State Legislature and several local school boards, grew The El Paso Young Democrats into the biggest county chapter of the organization in the state, and worked to bring state and national resources back home to help fight for what our residents need and deserve here in Colorado Springs. Today, I am running to be El Paso County’s next County Commissioner representing our Fifth District because I believe that our residents deserve a local government that will fight to make all of our lives more affordable, safer, and healthier. I am running because I believe that our residents deserve someone willing to fight to make El Paso better for everyone, not just the one percent. I have spent my life fighting: fighting to survive as a kid, fighting to get by as an adult, and fighting to make our County everything our communities deserve every day. Now, I am running for County Commissioner because I am ready to fight to make El Paso a better home for all of us.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, but nothing worth doing is. I’ll be honest, running for office is a lot of work and it takes a lot out of you. It is time consuming, expensive, and emotionally draining but it is also worth it. Having the opportunity to connect with communities across El Paso, meet new people, and learning new things every day is truly a gift like no other. I love Colorado and I love this County. So, no matter what challenges I face or struggles I go through, at the end of each day I go to bed knowing that I have done everything I can for the communities, people, and county that I love and there is nothing more fulfilling I could imagine.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a local organizer and activist who specializes in Electoral Politics here in El Paso, and I am running to be the County’s next Commissioner representing our Fifth District. I am known for the work I have done organizing the El Paso County Young Democrats and campaigning for Progressive and Democratic candidates throughout the county. Over the years I have been organizing here in El Paso, my team and I have had a lot to be proud of and celebrate, from electoral victories to organizing wins, there is no shortage of things we have accomplished already. What I am most proud of though is the number of young organizers, candidates, and local leaders I have been lucky enough to help recruit and inspire. We did a lot of good work during my time in the Colorado Young Democrats leadership, but the best moments were when we could walk away knowing we inspired a new leader to help fight for our shared future and those are the moments that I am the proudest of. With that said, I believe what sets me aside from others is my approach to leadership. I was taught that to be a good leader took the wisdom to know when to be compassionate, self-sacrificing, or forgiving and when to be stern, unyielding, and protective. A leader must know when to slow down and help those around them, they must know when to silence themselves and others to hear the voice of the quietest one present, and, most importantly of all, a leader must be willing to put their people above themselves regardless of the personal cost. I believe a good leader must be willing to lead by example and stand up for those around them. It is this approach to my work and leadership that I believe sets me apart from others the most.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
If elected this November, I will be the youngest County Commissioner to serve in Colorado’s history, as well as the first Democrat elected to The El Paso Board of Commissioners in Fifty-Six Years.
