Meet Poet!c Rams (Ramses Martin) of Colorado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Poet!c Rams (Ramses Martin).

Hi Poet!c Rams , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started writing since I was still in single digits (7 years old). I’ve always been told positive round-about things about my poetry and recommended by teachers, mentors, friends and peers for readings and events. It wasn’t until near the end of 2024 that I started writing more consistently and varied. Ever since I’ve just been being patient and open-minded with everything, with a fair discernment ahead of my poetic grooves (books, music, plays, indie films, etc.)

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely been one of many bumps and bruises. I’m usually the younger individual amongst these crowds (20 years old) so people kind of throw you under the bus, no issues over here though, it’s understandable, especially with posers and hype-beasts saturating the authenticity of everything these days. I’m definitely still the ‘underdog’, smoothly and with gratitude to self, building the road ahead of me with inclusion but full circle confidence upon ideas and manifestations that truly no one believed in until very recently. All in all, it’s been a rewarding journey, I wouldn’t trade it for nothing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
This is a funny question, to keep it short I tell people “I’m a poet” which is a wild-card kind of scenario, some people understand and can fathom it right away, others get caught in disbelief and start to wonder off, asking me questions considering my portfolio. Ultimately, I’m a “artistic intellectual” (quoted from Amanda Seales) who studies all the time as ‘multi-disciplinarian’ whose a poet first, writer second, artist third, musician fourth and all the other things secondly. What I’m most proud of and believe sets me apart is my individuality. I’m someone who can move with the pack but I’m not reliant on it for my own standing, I love empowering my ones and like-minds around me, but it’s clear from my interests (reading books, crate digging, watching documentaries, studying damn near every genre of film/music) that I’m a lonewolf ultimately. This is very evident when my artistic output comes into play, most people don’t attend or pay attention to it until a few listens through, it’s a different world within a world (of poetry, jazz, skating, youth, mental health, etc.), again it’s all good though (laughs).

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Anyone who really knows me knows I hate my phone, period.

I do enjoy the Letterboxed app though, great for cinema flicks and it’s an insightful resource for my poetry *sometimes*. I dig the Endel app too, amazing for soulful meditation.

I’m not really a podcast connoisseur either but the few I do engage are very cohesive and grounded, Tripp After Dark, Grown Folks Table, Native Land Podcast, Higher Learning, Water Hole Media, it’s just a lot of very BLACK stuff (laughs) but I’m open, just may take me a minute to get around to it.

Books though! I’m fairly an avid reader, some of my favorites are The Bridge by Solomon Jones, Paradise by Toni Morrison, Daddy was a Number Runner by Louise Meriweather, there’s just so much within this great plethora of literature. I love James Baldwin, Allen Ginsberg, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jack Kerouac, Saul Williams, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, a lot of Beat and Black Arts poets and authors. I dig some of the new shit too, Fanta Ballo, Cari Jane, Ken Jones, TSleeveless, etc. I’m reading “Your Blues ain’t Like Mine” (Bebe Moore Campbell) and “Makes Me Wanna Holler” right now, some dope reads.
