Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Bowlin.
Hi Lindsey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In a quiet corner of Denver near Platt Park and Wash Park, Lindsey Bowlin has created more than a salon — she’s created a sanctuary.
As the owner of FernHaven, a private salon suite rooted in personalization and connection, Lindsey brings nearly 20 years of experience behind the chair to every guest who walks through her door. What began as a career right out of hair school has grown into something far deeper than styling hair. Next year marks her 20th year in the industry — two decades of artistry, relationships, and evolution.
Lindsey started her career the traditional way: as an apprentice in a neighborhood salon. She spent nearly 12 years there, building her craft and cultivating the kind of loyal clientele most stylists only hope for. “Those years shaped everything,” she says. “I learned not just how to do great hair, but how to take care of people.” Over time, clients became friends, and appointments became conversations that stretched far beyond highlights and trims.
After years of pouring her heart into a decent sized shared space, Lindsey began to envision something more intimate — an environment where every detail reflected her philosophy of care, calm, and customization. In late 2019, she stepped into entrepreneurship, opening a shared salon suite with a fellow stylist in a newly built space. Each stylist ran their own business while creating a warm, collaborative atmosphere for their guests.
Then 2020 arrived.
Like many small business owners, Lindsey faced unprecedented challenges during the pandemic. Navigating closures, new regulations, and constant uncertainty required resilience and adaptability. She successfully maintained compliance with state, city, and industry standards while continuing to prioritize her clients’ safety and comfort. “It was one of the hardest seasons of my career,” she reflects. “But it was also empowering. It showed me what I was capable of.”
In 2023, Lindsey transitioned into her own private suite within the same building, and FernHaven was officially born — an evolution of her previous space, Fern & Ivy. The name reflects exactly what she’s created: a haven. A retreat from the pace of everyday life. A space where guests can exhale.
FernHaven is intentionally designed to feel calm, inviting, and deeply personal. Some clients come ready to share life updates — the exciting milestones, the heartbreaks, the funny cat stories. Others settle in with a laptop and a beverage, enjoying quiet productivity while Lindsey works her craft. There is no one way to experience an appointment at FernHaven — and that’s the point.
Lindsey specializes in personalized haircuts, including expert curly cuts, and rich, lived-in color designed to grow out seamlessly and beautifully. Her approach is thoughtful and tailored. “I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all hair,” she says. “Your cut and color should reflect your lifestyle, your maintenance preferences, and who you are right now.”
What truly sets Lindsey apart isn’t just technical skill — it’s connection. She speaks about her clients with genuine affection, describing how she has “hurdled through life” alongside many of them. Weddings, career changes, losses, babies, fresh starts — she has witnessed it all from behind the chair. “Doing hair is creative and fulfilling,” she says, “but the relationships are what make it meaningful.”
As she approaches 20 years in the industry, Lindsey continues to refine her craft while staying grounded in the values that built her career: consistency, warmth, integrity, and personalization. In a world that often feels rushed and transactional, FernHaven offers something different — an experience that feels intentional, unrushed, and entirely yours.
For Lindsey, it has never just been about hair. It’s about creating a space where people feel comfortable, confident, and cared for. And after nearly two decades, she’s still exactly where she’s meant to be — behind the chair, building beauty and community one appointment at a time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many independent stylists, Lindsey’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. From navigating the uncertainty of the pandemic to managing the behind-the-scenes realities of solo business ownership, she wears every hat — stylist, bookkeeper, scheduler, marketing team, and laundry service all in one. Balancing client care with bookkeeping, inventory, continuing education, and the daily operational details requires constant intention and discipline.
She’s also built her business in an increasingly saturated industry, where standing out takes more than talent alone. Through it all, Lindsey has remained committed to growth — investing in ongoing education, refining her craft, and creating an experience that keeps clients coming back year after year. It’s that blend of resilience, consistency, and heart that continues to set FernHaven apart.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Lindsey specializes in personalized haircuts — including thoughtfully tailored curly cuts — and rich, dimensional lived-in color designed to grow out seamlessly. Her approach is equal parts technical and intuitive. Every cut is shaped around bone structure, texture, and lifestyle; every color is formulated to enhance natural tones while maintaining depth and softness. The goal is always the same: hair that feels effortless, wearable, and uniquely yours.
But Lindsey’s creativity doesn’t stop at the salon door. Outside of FernHaven, she spends time watercolor painting at home, finding inspiration in nature, light, and subtle color shifts — the same details that influence her work behind the chair. She also loves designing and crafting custom details for gatherings and parties, from handmade décor to thoughtful finishing touches that make events feel personal and memorable.
For Lindsey, creativity isn’t confined to one medium. Whether she’s blending color formulas, shaping curls, layering watercolor washes, or assembling handmade pieces for a celebration, the thread is the same: thoughtful artistry rooted in care. That creative energy flows directly back into FernHaven, where every guest benefits from a stylist who sees beauty not just as a service, but as an experience.
What does success mean to you?
Success for me isn’t flashy or loud — it’s intentional, steady, and deeply personal.
Success is building a business that reflects your values instead of bending to industry pressure. It’s nearly 20 years behind the chair in the same community, with clients who have grown alongside you. It’s creating FernHaven as a space that feels calm, curated, and entirely yours — not rushed, not transactional, not cookie-cutter.
Success is sustainability. It’s managing the bookkeeping, the laundry, the scheduling, the continuing education, and still showing up creatively fulfilled. It’s surviving a pandemic as a small business owner and coming out stronger and more certain of your purpose.
Success is specialization with intention — mastering personalized cuts, curly hair, and lived-in color — while continuing to grow artistically. It’s watercolor painting at home because you love color and movement, crafting details for gatherings just because it brings you joy, and letting that creativity feed your professional work.
Most of all, your success is relational. It’s hurdling through life with your clients — celebrating marriages, new jobs, heartbreaks, babies, reinventions — and being a steady presence in their world. It’s clients who trust you not just with their hair, but with their stories.
Individually, your success is this:
A life where your work feels meaningful, your creativity feels expressed, your business feels sustainable, and your community feels connected.
That’s not just a successful stylist. That’s a successful life.
