Today we’d like to introduce you to Judith Phillips.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Following a diversified working career including elmentary school teacher, computer support and programmer, stay-at-home mother of 2 children, professional photographer, legal assisstant, I am now owner and CO of a bed and breakfast in Denver.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Yes and no. Yes, as I look back at all the adventerous learning experinces I’ve had and no, because most accomplishments are never easy and have their ups and downs.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
After buying an 1892 Victorian house in the SOBO neighborhood of Denver, I decided to open a bed and breakfast in our home upon the advice of one of our adult children. We had 4 empty berooms, a unique property in an up and coming neighborhood close to downtown Denver and plenty of time, now that my husband and I were retired. That was 10 years ago. We renovated 2 rooms that first year, added another the second year and opened the fourth the following year. We were very sucessful for the first four years, serving guests from all over the world and then COVID hit. We had to close the B&B for four months, as was demanded. During this time, we worked on our “repair” list and gradually received reservations, very few, the rest of 2020. We are still operating today in th
e same location with a few significant changes in the traveling industry. Government shutdowns. inflationary food and gas prices, government bickering, misunderstood political policies, wars, angry Americans all have an effect on our bottom line.
Our strengths far outweight the challenges of the time. At Off Broadway B&B, we continue to provide excellent service to our guests, a wonderful healthy breakfast with homemade, baked goods, our 2 Goledndoodles and a happy and welcoming environment. Our motto is :”just like home.” and we try to keep that attitude no matter who walks through our front door. Most of the time, it’s easy and enjoyable.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like the people best in our city with their warm and friendly attitude. What I like least is doing laundry..
