Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Payne.
Hi Joe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 1968, the Park Hospital District was formally established. Soon after, a dedicated group of women in Estes Park formed an organization to support the community’s new healthcare facility.
They named themselves the Elizabeth Guild, in honor of a woman whose husband was a major donor to the Hospital District. From the beginning, these women were a determined and passionate group of volunteers committed to strengthening local healthcare.
One of their earliest and most impactful initiatives was the creation of the “Nearly New Shop,” a thrift store designed both to raise funds for the hospital and to serve residents and visitors alike. After several years of fundraising efforts and collection drives—supported in part by members of the Quota Club—the shop officially opened in 1975. When it later moved to the West Park Center, it was renamed the Elizabeth Guild Thrift Shop, where it remains today.
For more than 50 years, the Elizabeth Guild has been a cornerstone of healthcare support in the Estes Valley. Through the thrift shop, the Guild has raised over $4 million to fund continuing education scholarships for hospital staff and to purchase critical medical equipment for patients at Estes Park Health.
Located on Elkhorn Avenue, the shop continues to be a welcoming, community-driven space powered by dedicated volunteers and generous donors. Volunteers frequently hear from visitors that their first stop in Estes Park is the Elizabeth Guild Thrift Shop. Over time, it has become a beloved tradition and a meaningful first destination for those returning to Estes Park.
Like many nonprofits, the Guild faces ongoing challenges, including limited storage capacity and a high volume of unsellable donations—nearly half of all items must be discarded or redistributed. Even so, donations remain essential to the mission, and the organization encourages contributions of clean, high-demand items to maximize both sales and impact.
As manager Joe Payne notes, the quality and uniqueness of donated items, along with the pride and care shown by volunteers, continue to set the shop apart.
Despite these challenges, the Elizabeth Guild continues to thrive through strong community support, demonstrating that generosity and volunteerism can make a lasting difference in local healthcare.
The Guild also recognizes the contributions of Village Thrift over the years and welcomes the presence of additional thrift operations in the community, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting local nonprofits.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The Elizabeth Guild Thrift Shop, while a vital community resource, faces several growing challenges common to nonprofit operations. A recent loss of storage space due to the removal of on-site sheds has limited the volume of donations the Guild can accept, adding pressure to its already compact space. At the same time, nearly half of all donated items are not suitable for resale, creating a significant burden on volunteers who must sort, dispose of, or redistribute them.
With minimal staff and heavy reliance on volunteers, maintaining efficiency can be difficult, especially during busy periods. Donation quality and seasonal mismatches further complicate operations, while limited space restricts the ability to accept larger or out-of-season items. Despite these obstacles, the Guild remains committed to its mission, supported by a generous community and a dedicated volunteer base.

Customers frequently remark that it is among the finest thrift shops they have visited.
This commitment to excellence, combined with a strong sense of community purpose, is what the Guild values most and what truly sets it apart.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
From Jan, Treasurer, Elizabeth Guild
I began working with the Elizabeth Guild in 2006, when the organization operated out of a much smaller space. Over the years, I have had the privilege of witnessing its remarkable growth and transformation into a highly organized, thoughtfully designed shop that appeals to a wide range of customers. This evolution has been especially evident in our current location, guided by the strong leadership of our manager, Joe Payne.
From Joe, Manager, Elizabeth Guild Thrift Shop
My interest in antiques and vintage items began in childhood, collecting sports memorabilia as well as tools and farm-related pieces while growing up in the Midwest. I relocated to Estes Park in 2013 and, after managing a successful restaurant for several years, chose to volunteer with the Elizabeth Guild. From my very first day, I found the experience both engaging and rewarding.
Volunteering at the Guild offers a unique combination of purpose and enjoyment, especially knowing that the funds we raise directly support our local hospital. After several years as a volunteer, I was honored to be asked to step into the role of store manager. While I had not previously managed a thrift store, my background as a dedicated thrift shopper, vintage reseller, and restaurant manager – spanning more than 20 years – provided a strong foundation for creating a welcoming and positive environment for our customers.
The most meaningful aspect of my role is working alongside our exceptional team of volunteers. Their willingness to support one another, both in the store and beyond, creates a truly special sense of community. One particularly memorable moment was assisting a father who came in search of a suit for his daughter’s surprise wedding. We were fortunate to have one that fit perfectly – an experience that reflects the impact our shop can have in meaningful, everyday ways.
