Meet Megan Durocher of Fit Learning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Durocher.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I wanted to be a teacher throughout elementary school and high school. While in college, I found my true passion in helping people at the individual level to really make a difference in individual’s lives. After I graduated from DePaul University with a bachelor’s in psychology, I became a paraprofessional in a special education department at the high school level. The student I supported worked with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and I had multiple opportunities to observe him apply behavior analysis in the school setting. Seeing how behavior analysis significantly improved an individual’s life, I pursued a master’s degree in applied behavior analysis (ABA) at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. In graduate school, I learned that I can combine ABA and academic skills, which led me to Fit Learning. Fit has been a catalyst in allowing me to pursue my passion. I am so grateful to be a Fit Learning affiliate and honored to carry out Fit Learning’s mission and core values in the Denver metro area.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road starting a business. My biggest struggle has been stepping out of my comfort zone. Before launching Fit Learning Denver, my comfort zone was conversing with people who had a similar background. Now, my comfort bubble has popped, and I get to share the great work Fit Learning produces with folks outside my industry. The founders of Fit Learning have created a strong support system among the Fit Learning affiliates, and we call ourselves the Fit Learning Family. It is extremely comforting to know I can always reach out to my Family of colleagues who are going through the same challenges and triumphs. It has been a challenging yet fun road thus far, and I am looking forward to the future of Fit Learning in the Denver metro area!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Fit Learning is a highly specialized program that is guided by learning science, and “learning science is the science of individual differences” (Kimberly Berens, 2019). We provide one-on-one academic coaching for all types of children, and we design curriculum for each child to target their skill strengths and deficits in core academic skill areas. Some tutoring companies have a set curriculum, and they move children through the curriculum based on time, not functional mastery of skills; or they focus on homework help. At Fit Learning, we focus on fluency of critical component skills within reading, mathematics, writing, and logic, which helps with future academic success. Additionally, our measurement system allows us to be very sensitive to individual differences so we can make quick decisions about each child’s performance, and it gives us confidence to say a child has mastered a skill. As a result of our methodology, we typically produce one year of academic growth in 40 hours. I wish I had access to Fit as a child, as I struggled early on in school. It is my passion in life to be able to work with children one-on-one and to be part of their academic transformation.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Denver is a wonderful city for Fit Learning! There are so many families making the Denver metro area their home. Also, Denver has a great community for small businesses, and so many people want to help me succeed. I am a member of multiple networking groups, and I am grateful for the people I have met on my entrepreneurial journey.
