Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Honeycutt.
Jen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Like so many photographers, I have always loved taking photos and preserving memories. I have kept scrapbooks for as long as I can remember. I took a film photography class in high school and learned some of the basics of photography, but studied to become a special education teacher in college. After teaching for nine years, I became a stay-at-home mom and wanted to capture my daughters as they grew up so I bought a camera and became self-taught in digital photography. Eventually, I started offering sessions to friends and from there my business grew quickly through word of mouth. I have been in business as Jen Honeycutt Photography since 2012.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It seemed like a smooth transition at first from taking photos of my own family to offering it to friends and growing organically, but I soon found out that the business side of it was a bit daunting. I needed to get insurance and file taxes and do all of the “non-fun” type of things that go along with running your own business. If I could go back, I would have taken a business course in college to help with some of the basic business aspects of starting your own business. Thankfully, I have befriended many other photographers over the years and they have all been a huge help!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jen Honeycutt Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I love photographing families! They are my favorite to capture because each family dynamic is so unique. I love seeing my return customers year after year and seeing the children grow up before my very eyes. So many of the kids give me big hugs when they see me!
I also enjoy photographing high school seniors because I love to talk to young adults about their future and help capture their personalities and interests in their senior photographs.
There are a few weddings that I photograph each year as well. Weddings are always so beautiful to witness and I am so grateful that they trust me to document their special day.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I think the biggest barrier for photographers (especially in the Denver area) is that there are so many of us. The market has become a bit oversaturated in my opinion. I try to make myself stand out by offering my services at an affordable rate for young families and really engaging with my clients. I like to make each session fun and as painless as possible since I know that getting everyone ready for a family photo session can be stressful and a lot of work (usually for the mom)!
