Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Glaze.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey into the world of health and wellness began when I was very young. My parents were very involved in the world of holistic healing and whole-body wellness, so I began, at a very early age being aware of the impact that what we put IN our body can have on us, whether negative or positive. When I went off to college, I wasn’t very interested in a career in health and wellness, so I studied business and went down that route, with healthy living and sharing with those around me, how to find easy ways to incorporate healthy and balanced living in the midst of chaotic life, still being a big part of my every day. Fast forward a few years and I decided to slightly shift my career focus and went back to school to study nutrition. When I became pregnant with my son, I began to become even hyper-aware of not only what I was putting IN my body, but also what I was putting ON my body. I began to more deeply navigate the world of labels, brands, ingredients, and chemicals, all in the hopes of understanding what was the “safest” to use while I was pregnant. That was when the biggest shift of my life began. Even with my nutrition degree, I quickly learned that they really didn’t focus much on what is used ON the skin, so this was a whole new world of learning for me and I was in LOVE. Two years later, I was pregnant with my daughter and still being on this quest to find the BEST products to use and being frustrated with the lack of transparency in the personal care industry, as well as having access to products that actually worked like they said they did, a friend introduced me to Beautycounter, a 6-year-old, women-owned company out of Santa Monica, CA. This was the beginning of what has become a 3+ year love affair with the movement of clean beauty and the power that we as consumers have in the marketplace.
Has it been a smooth road?
From the beginning of my career, I have always had a fascination of the entrepreneurial landscape; the freedom, the challenge, the ability to think outside of the box and start something new. From my beginning, I’ve preferred to play it safe. Let others take the risks and I’ll be on the “support team.” When I had my first child, I knew 100% that I did not want to return to my career, as I had been, but I knew I wanted to stay connected and plugged in into the professional world. When Beautycounter fell into my lap in late 2015, I didn’t know what to do with it. I was terrified that I wasn’t up to the task of running my own small business. Would I have what it takes? I know NOTHING about personal care products and why would people listen to me anyway, there were definitely people far more qualified than me in this world? So much self-doubt. But what I discovered was: 1. I learn as I go. 2. I don’t have to have it all figured out before I take the first step. 3. I’ve met the most amazing and supportive people when I’ve put myself out there and was willing to let things get messy. 4. When I leaned into the struggle of starting out, I continue to discover a new dimension of an inner strength I didn’t know existed AND I found my tribe of encouragers, cheerleaders and like minded professionals. My advice is to take the first step into that space that feels so scary and vulnerable because that’s often times where we grow into exactly who we are meant to be and by holding ourselves back, we never truly discover those hidden dimensions of ourselves that are our gift to the world!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Becky’s Beautycounter – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
The easiest way to explain the work I do is empowerment. As consumers, we have incredible buying power in the marketplace, but many people have no clue that they have this power. My job is to equip my clients with tools to make more informed decisions when it comes to the products they buy every day. I teach label reading, what chemicals in their personal care products are most harmful and the easiest ways to avoid them. I share practical healthy living tips that are budget-friendly and I customize my recommendations to most closely meet their unique personal and family needs. When we, as consumers, demand, safer, healthier, more transparent, etc, AND we choose to support brands that are doing good, we communicate loud and clear that those things are what matter to us. My work with Beautycounter is three-fold and perfectly aligns with the three pillars of the company which are to EDUCATE the consumer to make more informed choices by equipping them with information. Once we know better, we naturally want to do better, so that means providing solutions to choose better PRODUCTS. And last, but not least is ADVOCACY, which means that at Beautycounter we are actively advocating for the right type of legislative change to move this $65+billion dollar personal care industry into a place that is more health-protective. Currently, there are only 1.5 pages of legislation that regulate the industry and these pages have not been updated since 1938. Under current regulations, there is no “oversight committee” that is pre-checking products that go onto store shelves and into consumer’s hands. The FDA has no power to recall a product from the marketplace, even if it has received thousands and thousands of complaints. Right now, the EU bans over 1400 chemicals from being used in personal care products sold there. Canada has a list of 600 and rising. Currently, the US bans only 30 of those health-harming chemicals.
At Beautycounter, we take the risks from harmful chemicals being used on our skin every day very seriously and created a NEVER LIST. This is a list of over 1500 chemicals that are commonly used in personal care products that we will NEVER USE in our formulations. We are also a BCorp (benefits corporation), this means we are a triple bottom line; People FIRST, Planet SECOND, Profit LAST. We sit in good company with other like minded brands, such as Patagonia, Seventh Generation, and Toms Shoes and hold this high credentialing with pride.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I am the second oldest of seven children. We’ve always been a very tight knit family and have always faced challenges head on. Having so many siblings I’ve always had a little competitive streak in me and a willingness to push past my comfort zone to achieve the goal of whatever it was that I was pursuing. I also learned from an early age the power of connecting, helping, serving and loving others. I learned that the power of sharing information on things that I love can change someone’s life. The ripple effect is real and it’s almost impossible for me to keep quiet when I learn something new. I eat at a new restaurant that blows my mind, I tell everyone. I find a good sale on a favorite product at the store and I’m texting all my friends, I learn some new healthy living tip or something that is working well in my parenting journey, I share it. I never really understood how this can impact success until I started seeing how powerful it was as I began to build my Beautycounter business. When we love sharing what we love, other people get excited too. They want to rally around you and learn what you’re learning and share what they’re learning. This creates such an incredible community for success and networking and camaraderie.
