Meet Taryn Varnes of Safire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taryn Varnes.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Taryn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I discovered electronic music when I was 13 and immediately fell in love. In High School, one of my cousins started producing music and it influenced me to start making my first songs in Garageband in 2015. After moving to Denver for college, I started downloading free dj softwares and free DAW’s on my laptop and messing around with them when I had free time. My sophomore year, I met someone in school who Djed and after playing around on his controller, he helped me make my first DJ controller purchase. Living in Denver, also known as the bass capital, I felt motivated to begin Djing and diving further into music production. About two years ago, I took an Ableton Intro course through my school and since then, I have been addicted to the program!

Fast forward to today, I now have a home studio with CDJ’s and have been playing shows in Denver’s underground electronic scene for just over a year. In the last year, I have made so many friends in the music scene who every day motivate me and push me to be a better dj and producer. The music scene here is so supportive and I am so thankful for all the friends I have made with similar interests.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There is a steep learning curve for music production and it definitely took me a while to feel comfortable in various DAW’s. Even today, I feel that there is so much more for me to learn. I think for me personally, one of my biggest struggles was trying to learn to DJ, produce and play multiple shows a month while also finishing up my degree. There would be weeks when I’d be cramming for tests or spending 12+ hours a week on homework on top of working multiple jobs and would feel too exhausted to spend my free time focusing on music let alone if I had any free time. I’ve also struggled with depression and anxiety but have found music and creating to be a positive outlet to cope with these struggles. Now that I am finished with school, I am super excited to see where I can take my music career.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I created Safire a year ago. I love dying my hair fun colors and for a while was switching between pastel blues and purples. The name Safire just kinda clicked for me. I currently love to play deep wubby dubstep and experimental bass. I practice a lot in my free time on my CDJs at home and will spend hours if I can mixing and finding songs that complement each other and sound as one. I love combining deep dubstep drops while also mixing transitions that sound beautiful together. Currently, I play on CDJ’s but I am hoping to buy an Ableton push soon and start incorporating more live elements into my DJ sets.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was fairly introverted and used art as an outlet for being shy. Since preschool, I have loved art and creating. I started painting and drawing when I was 5 and over the years have practiced other types of art including photography, acting and theater design, graphic design, visual programming and sound design/ music production.
