Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry ‘That Hoodoo Lady’ Shone.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sherry. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I didn’t start out in folklore magic or African American ritual magic at all. I began my journey being pretty much told what to do by others.
My mom had a great influence on my upbringing and in my psyche.
She encouraged me but also was my greatest critic.
She challenged, threatened, inspired, nurtured, and created a confidence and competitiveness in me that I use every day in this new journey.
Once she passed, I became myself for who myself truly was.
It was difficult.
Once she passed, I changed my hair to natural (Sisterlocks/dreadlocks), I came out as Lesbian, I began researching African American/Slave roots, herbal medicines, natural/healthy eating. I think I did everything but start wearing an Afro and dashiki’s all day but I’m happy for the journey.
I hired a teacher to teach me tarot, then began leading a metaphysics meetup, then a tarot meetup (with over 1500 active members) finally my heart required me to do Bible based slave herbal medicine/practices.
Its definitely brought me home.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all.
There’s been some definite hills and valleys. Working with my ancestors has showed me that this is an ancestral path and not just one lifetime that’s mine. My lineage includes abuse and trauma (sexual and physical). We’ve been struggling as a people, gender and religion for generations. My story is my story but it isn’t unique. I am supported by thousands that have walked the same roads – I just have to watch my feet and make sure I intuitively look for their footprints that lead to healthier ways that do not harm me.
For other women, I recommend that you look into your natural self and start from there. Whether its lifestyle, health, career or love. I encourage my clients to go back to their roots – your natural self is your greatest inspiration. Do your research, DNA testing and genealogy or just simple heart work to connect to your own guides from those that have passed on. They are waiting and willing to share their best life with your best life.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
It’s definitely customized work. Not without judgment or fear or risks. If you think of the movie ‘Poltergeist’ and that psychic medium you’re about a quarter percentage right. Here’s some things I do or have done as a service.
I’ve spiritually cleared a home where a young father took his own life – so that his widow and child could be free to move forward.
I’ve spiritually cleared a home where a family was being tortured by an entity that physically manifested itself (by scratching family members, causing nightmares, moving things around the home, losing objects, etc.).
I’ve helped people that have their Amazon package deliveries stolen through prayer and herbal work.
I’ve helped people (while working with their therapist) get strength and courage to form new healthy love relationships with new choices and better results.
I’ve helped people through divorces (again with a therapist if my guides recommend the client seek that help)
I’ve worked with people that want help moving forward from a stuck place – however that has manifested using herbs, roots, incantations, prayers, and scripture.
I love where I am.
My most favorite thing to do is to help people with making homemade spiritually infused products: candles (even making homemade wicks), colognes/oils, spiritual cleansing products (yes, like dishwashing soaps, laundry detergent, cough syrups), foods, that are naturally made and prayed over to boost their ancestor ‘root’ nutrition value.
I come from a place of community versus competition. There are plenty of other readers and healing practitioners out there. There are some clients that I refer to others because we aren’t a good fit and vice versa. I come from a place of there’s plenty and not scarcity when it comes to my spiritual work. So far, this new mindset has increased my client base and my class attendees a hundred-fold.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
When I first started out – I had this revolving goal that I always gave myself. I never really enjoyed being in the moment.
My daughter is 28 and we just had a nice talk recently where she told me how she enjoys our close relationship now because she always felt second place to my career and love relationship.
That hurt me to hear her truth but it blessed me because she was content, safe and strong enough to speak her truth without fear. She doesn’t have the limits that I gave myself. She even moved to Puerto Rico by herself for a year.
I love that I may have encouraged this type of self-love in recent years because of my career change.
