Conversations with the Inspiring Taylor Ferguson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Ferguson.

Taylor, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, I was always resistant to the use of ibuprofen. I felt like it was just a way of masking symptoms as opposed to fixing the problem, therefore, I started to naturally gravitate to more natural forms of healing. Fast forward to formal education and I found myself intrigued by learning about the human body in depth. I also always had an appreciation for movement and athleticism. I always found myself looking into careers that served one or two of these interests, but never one that combined all three. During a summer internship, all of my interests found common ground in Chiropractic.

Chiropractic care is a natural remedy for daily aches and pains without the adverse side effects of ibuprofen. It can help athletes improve their movement patterns and recover from the side effects of training, as well as help everyday people recover from the stresses of daily life. We all move throughout our days and need to be able to do so without experiencing pain. I love being able to serve people from all walks of life effectively and naturally.

My formal education background is a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science from Elon University. A Masters of Science in Sport Science and Rehabilitation from Logan University and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Logan University.

Since finishing chiropractic school, I settled in Denver and started my own practice with two locations in Northwest Denver! My pathway was not linear nor was it one with much forethought, but the journey has brought me to exactly where I am supposed to be!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I do believe it has been a smooth road overall. That does not mean it has been easy or without struggle. I am VERY grateful for the success I have found thus far. My biggest struggle is not having people in my life who have also owned their own businesses to lean on for support and guidance. I have had to make my own connections with other chiropractors, small business owners, and coaches who can offer insight and suggestion. My advice for others who are just starting out is to find a mentor that you want to model your business after and ask them all of your questions, but also listen to their unsolicited advice because you may not even know what questions to ask. There are also a lot of free resources available to you if you take the time to access them. Most importantly, believe in yourself, even on the slow days, you got this!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Function First Chiropractic story. Tell us more about it.
I help active people alleviate aches and pains without having to use pharmaceuticals. I specialize in treating runners and CrossFitters, as those are my personal sports. My favorite areas of the body to work on are necks, knees, and ankles. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, I offer soft tissue treatment including – Active Release Technique, dry needling, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, and cupping. Every appointment begins with a movement evaluation and then uses a combination of the treatments listed above to reduce pain and improve function. Providing quality and effective care is my first priority, but customer service is just as important. In my office, you are always a person and never a number!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
In my industry, a common misconception is that you need to be big to be effective. So, therefore, a lot of people associate Chiropractic with being a male profession. People question my ability to be a chiropractor because of my size and gender. This can be a barrier at times, but I have found success in confidence.
