Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Chui.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kristin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started when I was 17, a senior in high school, and pregnant. I had no one that could relate with me, that was going through what I was going through. I had my daughter two days after the last day of my senior year and walked with my class for graduation five days later. After that day, most of my friends left for college or moved away. Even though I had an amazing support system with my family, my soon to be husband and a couple of close friends I felt lonely. I tried to join mom groups, but once they found out I was a “teen mom”, they would stop communication with me.
A year and a half after having my daughter, I got married to my high school sweetheart. I started working at urgent care and then an OBGYN as a receptionist and financial coordinator. Five years after having my daughter, we decided to add to our little family and had another beautiful baby girl. After having her, I decided to become a stay at home mom. At that time, those high school friends that drifted away started to come back and asked for advice on baby products. From baby bottles, toys, pacifiers, to diaper bags, strollers and beyond. I had always enjoyed baby products and researching different items, and testing which ones would be best for my family.
Two years later we had a handsome baby boy and I started doing research for the perfect diaper bag for three kids, two being two and under. That is when I stumbled upon a diaper bag brand that had a huge community of moms that shared the same passion of baby products that I had. My husband and I thought long and hard about what I could do with the knowledge and passion that I had, and that is when I decided to open up my own online mom and baby boutique.
Before opening my boutique, I knew that I wanted to have an online community for moms for moms to have a safe place, and somewhere they felt welcomed to just chat about mom’s life. No judgment, no hate, just a group of wonderful moms that want to share about their day, ask questions, vent about the hard times, and to bring each other up. Motherhood is hard! I want these ladies to know that they are not alone, there is always someone there for them.
I take pride in trying and testing each product that I sell. If it is an item that I am not happy with and don’t feel comfortable selling to my customers, I won’t. I want to make sure I only have the best for them and that I know about each item that I sell so I am able to quickly answer questions.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road to say the least. When I started, there was another baby boutique that saw me as a threat and did everything in their power to bring me down. It was a rough few months, a lot of tears shed but I never gave up even though the same days I wanted to. I didn’t let that bring me down. I took the negative and turned it into something positive. This has been a dream of mine for years, there was no way I would be defeated.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
The Nurturing Elephant is an online mom and baby boutique. We sell blankets, bottles, pacifiers, toys, environmentally friendly items, but the items we specialize in are diaper bags. Since this is a mom-owned business, I love involving my kids in any way possible. From packaging orders to helping take product pictures, they enjoy it all. Some of our pictures have been featured on the brand’s social media and websites.
Earlier this year, I teamed up with a diaper bag company and we collaborated and designed a diaper bag exclusively for The Nurturing Elephant with the help of the owner, we decided to dedicate the bag in memory of my grandmother.
The Nurturing Elephant is known for having live videos on Facebook to showcase products since my customers can’t touch or feel the items for themselves. The purpose of the live video is to be able to answer questions, help compare an item to another similar item, and to chat and get to know my customers. I also make YouTube packing videos for diaper bags, so you can see how each bag packs.
I also take great pride in my customer service and shipping times. I try to get each order out of my door within a day or two of when a customer places an order. I also respond to emails, comments, and messages as quickly as possible. I try to have good relationships with my customers as well, and not making them feel like just an order, but someone special, as they all are!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love how family-friendly Parker is. It is a nice place to raise a family, gorgeous parks, and many trails to explore.
