Today we’d like to introduce you to Mick Westerman, Cody Mitchell, Zac Caputo and Grant Jameson.
Mick, Cody, Zac and Grant, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We are lucky enough to have a quintessential, American Dream sort of story–we jokingly refer to it as our “love story”. Cody and Zac are childhood friends and classmates from Austin, Texas. Grant is Cody’s cousin and grew up alongside the other Austin boys. Mick is the fourth of five children from a cattle ranch near Chugwater, Wyoming.
In the Spring of 2011, Cody and Zac were traveling Europe on a gap year before college, while at the same time, Mick had recently graduated from the University of Sioux Falls and was on his post-grad walkabout from South Africa to Europe. The three of us first met on the rooftop bar of our hostel, situated right below the Acropolis and fast friends were made. After traveling to Greece and Italy together for three weeks, we made a pact to shoot our first film together two years from then.
In the summer of 2013, we shot our first short film, a western called The Reckoning that Zac had written and that we went on to shoot, direct and produce. Mick moved to Texas shortly after, and in the spring of 2015, Zac made a tough decision to move to LA to cut his teeth on the representation side of the film industry. It wasn’t until the fall of 2017 that Mick and Cody first founded Mitchell Mitchell in Austin. After a productive beginning in Austin, which included, among other projects, producing and directing their first feature film, The Stumblers (premiering 2020), and a large-scale commercial campaign for Rocky Ridge Trucks, Zac moved back to re-join the team, and Grant came on-board once the gang decided to pick up their lives and their company and head to Colorado.
Since our arrival to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, we have been steadily establishing ourselves as a premiere production house for every type of business; from start-ups to legacies, we have quickly begun to make a name for ourselves through our ability, drive, and most of all, undying love of the process of storytelling to produce high-quality commercial campaigns at one of the most competitive rates in all of the West. Our unique blend of hands-on experience and professionalism is tempered by our country roots that put everyone at ease. We absolutely love what we do, and it shows in our work-ethic and enthusiasm for each and every project we take on.
Our motto is: “Have camera, will travel.”
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Mostly smooth, we think, in comparison to many fledgling small-businesses, which we attribute to our close friendships and the natural chemistry we have on and offset. It’s never easy to start a company, no matter the circumstances, but when you start to put your money into something with your best friends, new dynamics emerge and we really feel like our ability to be open and honest with each other is one of our strongest qualities.
We’re in this for the long-haul, and we feel very secure in going all-in on ourselves and this company. This is not a job to us; not the kind of work you retire from. We’ll be making films for the rest of our lives. Granted, every business owner knows that there will always be financial stress, especially at the beginning, but passion and determination are a great salve for that burn.
Please tell us about your business.
Some of the things you can expect when you’re working with the Mitchell Mitchell film production team are obsessive attention to detail, our unique handle on the film industry mixed with our Western-style, and our firebrand enthusiasm for film making. We’ve married the work ethic and easygoing charisma of our small-town roots with the style and savy of the Denver business market. We pride ourselves on our ability to work with clients big and small to bring their vision to life and exceed expectations.
We’re a small production company, but we pack a big punch. All of us wear countless hats throughout our process, and it’s our well-roundedness that allows us to keep as much of the work in-house as we want and focus on efficiently delivering a premiere product no matter the client or scope of the project.
One of the things that we are most proud of as a company is the story of our inception. The fact that we met Mick in a hostel in Athens and then not only forged a lifelong friendship but planted the seeds of a fully-functioning production company is something that we feel sets us apart from anybody else who does what we do.
From Colorado to California, Texas to Ohio, Wyoming to Georgia, we’ve set up shop and forged connections across the country. We may be Colorado-based, but nothing is stopping us from bringing the camera to you wherever that may be.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are continuing to work on filling out a client roster as wide-ranging and diverse as possible but also keeping an eye on the classic foible of rushing our expansion. It is incredibly important to us that we deliver the absolute highest quality product for each and every client. We take an immense amount of satisfaction in establishing long-term relationships with other people and companies with whom we share a common value and believe in. Life is so much more enjoyable when you foster a real connection with the people next to you.
