Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Finney.
Mike, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, my introduction to photography is very cliche. I received a hand-me-down camera and began to dabble behind the lens on the weekends, taking generic photos of street signs and flowers and what-not. It took a few years before I got the itch to actually pursue it as more than just a hobby but I thankfully have some great creative people in my life who were able to help me get going. It all started with my friend Jimmy Bryant of AtomicChildDesign, shooting his products to help promote his brand through social media and eventually he would connect me with the Rocky Mountain Soda Co.
Soon after I met the inspiring Andy Bee and began working with her to show off her talents which actually made me discover a passion for portrait photography, an area I was always afraid to pursue. I’ve never been the most social of people and the thought of having to direct and manage people always scared me, and it still kind of does, but the emotions and mood that can be achieved just excite me. Not to mention seeing people’s reactions to seeing photos of themselves. Ever since I’ve been looking for local brands and models who want help to promote themselves and their brands.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not. Everyone has a camera in their hand or in their pocket at all times and therefore they don’t see the benefit or need to have professional photos taken. If anyone anywhere can take a photo at a moment’s notice, then why should they pay someone to do it for them? Like most art forms, it’s also hard to explain the cost to those who just don’t understand the amount of work that goes into producing just one image, let alone many.
It’s important to get an outside perspective of your brand or image, as you don’t always have the best point of view from the inside, and a professional photographer can do that for you. They can help you achieve the image that you want and promote you in ways that you may be unable to achieve or have the time to accomplish. With social media being as important as it is to modern brands, it’s crucial to get yourself out there.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Well, my business is called 1987 Digital (1987 was taken) and I specialize in portrait and brand photography. You may have seen my work with AtomicChildDesign, Victor Hockey, Rocky Mountain Soda Co, or featured pieces with Andy Bee that have been published in a few local magazines. I’d say the thing that I’m most proud of is that I’ve had the opportunity to help my friends promote their brands. As for what sets me apart from other photographers, I would say that it’s my background in art and design. I think it gives me a different perspective when it comes to the editing process.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Jimmy Bryant, Andy Bee, and Adam Rosenthal have been my biggest supporters by continually working with me to promote their brands which in turn promotes my work as well.
