Meet Trailblazer Stacy Lewallen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Lewallen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started doing my family’s hair when I was around 12 and continued through high school by making wild choices for my own hair as well as my friends. I always enjoyed the creativity and self-expression that is offered. I still love that element of my career. Being a hairstylist has allowed me to create real connections with people and have a direct effect on how they see themselves… what I like to call “Hairapy.”

I believe that what is said is only a portion of what is being communicated. I do my best to tune in to who my client is, what fuels them. I can often see them in a way that they can’t. I use this to create a unique look that is perfect for them. I just love when I hear “Go for it…. I trust you!” I am a self-professed hair nerd and I’m always looking at new techniques and following artists who inspire me.

I am a Colorado native and feel that life should be lived outdoors! I love cycling, hiking, camping… even just relaxing around the fire pit at home. I am married and have four children. Two sons who are now 25 and 23 and my amazing wife and I are raising 4 1/2-year-old twins… I understand the struggle of maintaining balance! I have been self-employed for 15 years and owned a full-service salon for eight years before moving into a beautiful private studio. I truly believe in empowering and celebrating others. I try not to take myself too seriously. But I am 100% committed to my craft.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Is there such a thing?? If so, I must’ve taken a detour! I was 29 years old when I made the decision to finally start cosmetology school. I had two children, working two jobs and also going through a divorce. It was a constant balancing act! I knew in my heart it was the right thing to do and wouldn’t give up. I bought my first salon nine months out of school and learned so much the hard way. But I learned. I had a client once ask me how I kept going when it seemed that nothing was working out the way I wanted it to… I told her that if I gave up, I would be teaching my sons that it was ok to do the same. And I refuse to teach them that!

We all have dreams and things that energize us. That little voice saying “Go that way!” That voice is our light and the world needs it! When we make that voice louder than all the critics, we move forward. We give others permission to live by their light. Listen to your voice! No matter how many doors close, or people discount you… keep listening! Keep moving forward!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Haven Hair Studio – what should we know?
I’ve been behind the chair for 16 years now and many of my clients have been with me the whole time! I’ve become part of their families and they’ve become part of mine! I’ve even had the pleasure of officiating a wedding for two people who started as clients and became a family. Creating real connections is what I love the most. I take care of people ranging from 9 months to 90… and everything in between. My work isn’t just what I do, it’s who I am.

My favorite service is dimensional color…. highs and lows, depth and light… mimicking the hair color that children have! No two results will be the same, as I customize for each client to create a look that works for them and the lifestyle they love!

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Somewhere along the way, we forgot to build each other up. Our biggest obstacle is often ourselves! Sisterhood is so powerful and can transform the way we see ourselves and what we believe we can do! We need to encourage and support each other as women! I have the most amazing tribe of women in my life (including my 4 1/2-year-old daughter) who inspire me and support me. I want to do the same for them, and my clients, to see how far they can go!
