Today we’d like to introduce you to Krysta Klinzmann.
Krysta, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started in the salon industry when I was 16 as a receptionist at a small mom and pop salon in Fort Collins. My high school schedule allowed me to work part-time in the afternoons which quickly turned into me knowing that this was the career for me! I would observe the other stylist and watch their techniques and what made them individuals in the industry.
One of the biggest things I realized while watching them was not only is the product they were producing important, but the biggest thing I noticed were these amazing connections between a stylist and a client. This was more than just a job, it was a soul kind of purpose.
At 16 I felt like I was 25. High school was glorified babysitting that I wanted no part of so I graduated early and my counselors pushed me to go to “real” college because I excelled academically. I never had an interest in that. I wanted real connection and to grow up as fast as I could.
I graduated beauty school with my cosmetology license in 10 months and only took one day off to walk in my high school graduation. I started booth rental right out of beauty school part-time and then had another job to support my career.
I would credit my good work ethic to my mom. She is one of the hardest workers I know. Other influencers in my childhood left me to think I was bred to only be a worker. I can say there were definitely positives and negatives to being pushed so hard.
For the span of six years, I went through three different salons….. mom and pop and then bougie. Seeing the wide range of atmospheres really put into perspective what I wanted.
I went solely on my own full time for the past five years. Started that journey by renting my own studio at Sola. That gave me the confidence that I could truly do it 100% by myself.
I had the most career-altering experience while I was at my Sola salon. I did hair and makeup for a photoshoot for a now sweet friend of mine that happens to work for a huge wedding venue in LaPorte. Because of this one client’s experience, they slowly started sending me brides. This was the area I really wanted to start specializing in more. After getting positive feedback I became Tapestry House preferred vendor. LIFE CHANGING!
After four years of consistently being their preferred vendor, I am now able to specialize in blondes, balayage and bridal! I do about 50 weddings a year on top of my behind the chair clients.
I am so lucky to have had this opportunity that it then spiraled into my husband and I adding on a studio to our place in a tiny little farm town called Nunn. You blink and you miss it. This is me…. big city style, small-town service. My husband has been such an amazing supporter. I was so nervous to put a studio in a small town because I was afraid people wouldn’t come see me because it was off the beaten path. Contrary to my belief I am busier then I have ever been. It’s amazing what happens when you truly start believing in yourself as much as everyone else does! Now I have an amazing team that I’m able to contract out to do huge weddings. Things are happening that I could have never dreamt of.
So if your vibe is small farm town, goats/chickens running around… a train that randomly blocks the entrance so you have to go a back road sometimes…., but natural glam/ feeling like a million bucks…. utilizing your amazing features that you already have…. well me too. Let’s be friends.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some of the biggest struggles I have dealt with is finding an atmosphere that shares your same values.
Mom and pop salons were nice because of the easy going-ness/ relationships, but sometimes lacked in being relevant in current trends, etc.
Going into a high-end salon…. then it was less relationship-driven and more cutthroat. Not as team-oriented and little sassier. But because of this, I gained some more confidence in my work! So neither worked for me so I blended it together. And that was hard to figure out. Lots of trial and error!
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
I specialize in blondes, balayage and bridal!!!!
I am known for doing hair and makeup for brides and their parties. I get sent pretty much every person who has long hair that wants some sort of blonde or blonde-esque look.
The thing I’m most proud of is that I try to be realistic when it comes to every service. I am all about enhancing what your mama gave you instead of thinking you have to be Pinterest perfect. I love making my clients feel amazing….. and that you don’t have to sell your firstborn to get a service done by me. Also, the fact that people trust me on one of the biggest days of their lives!!!!!! Ummmm ultimate compliment right there!
