Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Rampulla.
Caitlin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 2016, I was 29 and ready to start working towards a future I could be proud of. That was a really big year for me, as I married the love of my life and started this journey we’re on today.
So, the hustle began. While searching craigslist for a job, I came across an ad for a new salon opening in Boulder, Downtown Refinery. I was hired as a front desk coordinator, and soon realized I loved being in the salon. I saw for the first time a glimpse into being a busy, successful independent hairstylist. These women were professional, put together, created gorgeous hair, and made some serious money. I was hooked! Shortly later, while working two jobs, Downtown Refinery and managing Beauty Brands, I was encouraged to enroll in hair school where I was referred to Mary Cahill of the Form and Functions Arts/Education program. It was an apprenticeship program, so my time at the salon and my in-school days allowed me to finish school at an accelerated rate!
Finally, I was officially a hairstylist after being a waitress for almost 15 years! I was thrilled to start looking for a hairstylist position, and I landed at Demaj salon in Lafayette. There, the owner Dusty took me under her wing. I was learning so much, while she was an incredible mentor to me, helping me with the business components of operating a salon. I loved the culture right away, and quickly found myself deeply immersed in countless hours of research and development.
I started taking hundreds of before and after photos of my work while creating my presence on social media. At this time, I was following all the stylists I could on social media with an emphasis on the artistic and technical skills of master level hair professionals. I have watched thousands of videos, and I’m so grateful to the online community that answered all my questions, helping to expand my repertoire.
My career took a significant turn for the best, when my mother-in-law’s hairstylist, Eric, reached out to offer me a booth rent option at Studio 3 Hair. Eric had been a seasoned salon owner in the Boulder area for some time, my mother-in-law a client of his for 20+years. I was truly shaken by his offer and his generosity, he helped me to make the transition of salon employee to business owner and Hair by Rampulla was born in October of 2017. At Studio 3 Hair, Eric, Lesa, and Rachel all gave me insight into running my small business, it was a magical time and they are all amazing people!
Sadly, that salon closed in April 2017, and we went our separate ways, I was ready at that point for a private studio space, but nothing was in my area of Lafayette/Louisville. Luckily, I sat down with the owner of Trivium Salon in Louisville, Rori and was quickly welcomed into her commission-based salon. The salon was beautiful, and I was very lucky to be the only independent stylist at Trivium. I will always love my hair family at Trivium and leaving there was bittersweet. However, on September 9th, 2019 I was handed the keys to my own salon at My Salon Suite, Louisville. Hair by Rampulla has found a new home just shy of 3 years after getting licensed as a hairstylist! Today I’m in my very own salon, my happy place to create beautiful hair!
I couldn’t have done my hair journey without my husband Zach. He’s my rock and our love is the magic. We now have a beautiful life and I’m so grateful to do what I love for a living.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road was anything but smooth. After I stopped letting fear guide me, everything fell into place. I would say just go for it! Anything you want to do, do it and give it your all! Trust your gut instinct and most importantly, be a good person.
