Today we’d like to introduce you to TeaYaMay, Young Fait.
TeaYaMay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in Aurora CO primarily. At an early age, not having many friends I gravitated to music. I loved hip hop and the creative aspects of it. I was always a decent writer but particularly enjoyed writing poetry, it was a way to vent. Exploring all the different possibilities writing and rhyming could do for my creativity, it evolved to writing raps. I kept a lot of my work growing up so I could watch my growth as a writer. I kept my passion to write within my immediate family. The few friends I had in high school didn’t know how passionate I was about it. From about 2006 to 2012 I was in a toxic relationship. With me transitioning from high school to college and working full time it was affecting me emotionally, mentally and physically. I then gathered strength to end the toxic relationship and refocus my energy into something more constructive instead of destructive. I then wanted to take my writing more seriously and pursue music. In July 2012, through networking, I met a man named Brandon aka Young Fait.
He is a California native who moved here a few years previously. He was the founder of a movement called weird musik. It is/was a movement of talented artists who were/are different than the commercial artists, different than the artists you always hear. Him and I began working on music. I then became the first lady of the weird musik movement (T-May). From songs to shows, studio to radio interviews, we worked hard at establishing a fan base. I’ve won awards, headlined, co-headlined and been on tours. Young Fait has toured, headlined, co-headlined and we both have had numerous publications. In 2017 I changed my name from T-May to TeaYaMay for better branding purposes.
Young Fait and I have a collaboration album coming out in November 2019 Entitled “32 Motives”. We have definitely faced many hardships as well as received numerous blessings from music. Music brought us together. We will continue to grow and let our music tell our story!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road by any means. Being weird means being different which we all know people reject what they don’t understand. People fear the unfamiliar. So that is an obstacle within itself. Many people refused to work with us based on what they felt it would do to their image. I’ve been criticized for my weight and my appearance. Music is over saturated with artists who lack substance, so being a conscious female rapper has its downfalls definitely.
We’ve also been homeless, we’ve been talked down on, we’ve lost a lot of friends along the way but it has never stopped our motivation.
Tell us about your music. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
Well, our movement Weird Musik sets us apart automatically, it was created for those who didn’t quite fit in with the rest, or the outcasts, the black sheep. We represent going against the grain making music with unique ideas, geared towards making a difference and for the different. We are proud of the following we have built, not followers of trends but people who think outside the box. Our fan base is truly beautiful.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
That’s a great question actually. Hip-hop is constantly changing everyday. I personally feel split about this. Part of me feels like its evolving as far as crossing over into other genres and breaking into different markets. The other part still craves the lyrical aspects and creativity behind it. I miss the old school songs with witty lines and more substance. Nowadays its all sexualized. Me being a conscious female rapper its frustrating to be in an industry that idolizes sex symbols and overlooks raw talent. I really hope that consciousness in the music industry makes its way back to fruition but with today’s generation, I really don’t see that happening.
