Meet Martha Weidmann of NINE dot ARTS in LoHi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Weidmann.

Martha, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When NINE dot ARTS opened its doors in 2009 (just one door in a closet-sized office rented at an architecture firm, to be exact), my partner, Molly, and I had a vision for a new kind of art consulting firm. We wanted to build a company that not only delivers thought-provoking art that engages audiences but is also embedded deep into the art community itself and serves as an advocate for both art and artists. We wanted to prove that you can grow a successful, for-profit arts sector business while displaying non-profit, mission-based values. And we wanted to work with clients who share their appreciation for the power of art to eliminate the ordinary and transform spaces.

Today, with lots of doors and an entire staff formally trained in the history, theory, and curation of art, that vision is not only intact, but it’s also thriving. Because while we’re in the business of curating narratives and creating art experiences for our clients, we find just as much satisfaction in finding new and emerging artists and helping them gain visibility for their work. Art helps everybody win.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
After ten years in a growing business, there are too many challenges to count! We started the company during a recession when I was pregnant with our second child, and my husband was in graduate school, Later on, my business partner and I both had children in the same year (2015). That was a fun challenge! We’ve learned so much about running our company and managing people through our experience as parents.

Please tell us about your business.
NINE dot ARTS bridges the gap between arts and business. We are an award-winning art advisory firm known for curatorial creativity, management of large-scale multi-phase projects and forward-thinking vision. With knowledge and experience, we curate inspiring art collections that show beauty, creativity, and purpose. We built our own app, dotfolioart.com where artists can apply for our database and share their portfolios with us online!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing.
