Today we’d like to introduce you to Jammie Speyer.
Jammie, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Registered Yoga Teacher and Wellness Advocate specializing in yoga for women, trauma survivors and those managing chronic pain. My work is deeply informed by the science of neuroplasticity and contemplative practice. I weave these bodies of work into small group workshops and private yoga sessions. I have been teaching in the Boulder area for seven years.
I came to yoga to help manage chronic pain due to Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I soon realized that yoga would play a much larger role in my life. I found that through practicing yoga I felt better physically and mentally. My experience with yoga was so profound, that I decided to make my passion my profession.
In January of 2012, I began studying Integrative Yoga Therapy with Nancy Levenson of NamasteWorks Yoga. I was certified as a Yoga Instructor with a Therapeutic Focus at the 200 hour level the following year.
In 2013, I studied Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga with Katie Wise and Kirsten Warner in Boulder, CO. The following year I became a birth and postpartum doula, again under the guidance of Katie Wise. Each of these modalities supports the work I do in supporting overall wellness.
My most recent passion is neuroplasticity and contemplative practice, and the amazing ways that we can work towards healing through meditation, energy medicine, and yoga.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have certainly been struggles! For me, I think the biggest hurdle has been that I am physically different than most yoga teachers I know, especially those in Boulder County. I was diagnosed with RA at the age of 6, and my body sustained a permanent loss of range of motion. Asana often looks quite different in my body then it does in the bodies of others. I modify a lot for myself and my clients. It took me a long time to be confident in my work knowing that I look different.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I have been teaching yoga for over seven years now, in various studios in and around Boulder. I loved teaching group classes, but I felt like I was lacking a true connection with my students. It can be hard when the group changes from week to week to create a sense of community.
This year I decided to fully step into the kind of yoga that I want to teach, which is deeply rooted in a sense of connection, community and authenticity. I think this is something so many of us are lacking in our daily lives, and it is something that we are deeply needing.
Jammie Speyer Yoga grew from this desire. I don’t teach drop-in classes. My small group classes are eight week sessions capped at ten students. We meet weekly for 90 minutes. We begin each class with a check-in, followed by movement, and ending in group meditation. I love this model because it allows me to connect deeply with each person in the space – the opportunity to know what their bodies need and where they are energetically. The students get to connect with one another genuinely. And I get to be authentic too – we all get to meet each other where we are and laugh, and cry, and grow together.
I love private sessions. Our bodies hold so much and in a private session, I have the opportunity to work with my clients towards deep release. When we release physical tension the body is holding, we also release emotional tension and trauma. It can be truly freeing! I am also passionate about wellness for educators and children. I am currently creating a four week program for educators to promote holistic wellness in and beyond the classroom.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I absolutely adore Boulder County and the surrounding areas. Like so many of us, I love to hike and explore the beautiful trails and parks around us. I also just find the natural beauty so inspiring and calming.
In terms of yoga and contemplative practice, this is an amazing place to try out new classes and experience the amazing teaching styles of some of the best yoga teachers in the country. I love to learn, and there is always a fantastic workshop, retreat, or class nearby.
