Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Riegle.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lydia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I came to art in 2009 after taking an art class with a friend. My background is rooted in an immigrant background where family and friends were a wonderful and intriguing mix of languages, customs, and thinking. I value that still today.
In respect to my art start, there has been on-going directed study, self-direction, and a focus on questions – about art and the creative process, about me, and about how I articulate my artistic voice to others through materials, process and thinking.
Here are some thoughts on the process….I like to use a drawing quality in my art, painting and now printmaking because lines, to me, represent connections or pathways – to others and to different ways of thinking. I believe we have a backstory to share and I attempt to include that in my work – free form, complex organic markings with hard-edged geometric forms that combine to form abstract contemporary work.
Currently, I am a member of an art co-operative and a small group of very talented women artists. I am directly involved in the art community and appreciate exhibiting my work at different venues throughout the city. I value a life fully engaged and attempt to do what it takes to make that happen.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Perseverance….and continual individual growth….and not losing heart or focus…and being present….and perseverance….and enjoying having this goal….and enjoying the fine events, rewards and terrific people that have come my way….and not stressing about the things that didn’t. As “Pete the Cat” , (authors: Kimberly Dean, James Dean and Eric Litwin) said….”because, it’s all good!”
Please tell us more about your art. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a printmaker and oil painter who specializes in contemporary, abstract expressionist art. My paintings are often energetic, complex and colorful and my monotypes are atypical in that they have a loose, painterly quality that is unexpected. I enjoy collaborating with art seekers, be they interior designers, art consultants, galleries, or folks that want to add to the enjoyment of their environment. Homes and commercial spaces have large visual spaces – spaces that are made more interesting, more beautiful and more meaningful with the inclusion of art. Art starts the dialogue, and often provides the connections.
What sets me apart: I am interested in hearing the story and finding a way to get there – I value the give and take of articulation and ideas…
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future: continuing the art journey, continuing to grow as an artist, and to find a fit in gallery representation.
On the personal side, I will be traveling to Argentina and Patagonia in January. I’m looking forward to that travel experience. I also want to return to Venice in two years for the next Biennale! This year it was fantastic seeing such good international art – quirky, thought-provoking, super creative work!

Fabulous interview! I’ve known you for years, but I haven’t know this aspect of your work. And your work looks wonderful at D’art Gallery through November 10, 2019.
