Meet Jane Lowry Pusch of Quoi Happens in Centennial

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Lowry Pusch.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jane. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Canada then got married and moved to the USA 30 years ago. I taught English in Japan, then got my MBA and spent most of my career in Massachusetts before moving to Denver several years ago. I love writing and combined that with my passion for environmental issues, and that’s how my business got started. I wrote “The Why-entist and the Wild Weather”, a STEM picture book for kids, to gently introduce the science behind greenhouse gases, and how solar and wind energy can help the climate. The book releases October 31, 2019 and I have several speaking engagements lined up afterward. I’m very excited to start this new venture!

Has it been a smooth road?
Independently publishing a book can be full of pitfalls – cost overruns, time delays, predators ready to take your money, and the doubters. I was fortunate to have the support of a group full of authors who have already been down the path, and a mentor, Judith Briles (The Book Shepherd). Still, I had issues, like one illustrator who took my money and didn’t produce anything, and another one who did terrible work and I had to drop her halfway through.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Making kids (and their adults) stronger and smarter when it comes to Climate Action. I mentioned my book, “The Why-entist and The Wild Weather” – it is the first in a series – that gives its readers the vocabulary to talk intelligently about solar and wind energy, and greenhouse gases. It can bring conversations about global warming into the mainstream instead of being a “special topic”.

I will be speaking at schools and other events to empower those audiences to take small steps – like rejecting straws and plastic bags at grocery stores etc. I’m proud of the fact that I walk the talk. For example, I drive an electric car that runs on solar power most of the time.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Climate Action, environmental movements, icons like Greta Thunberg and Bill McKibbon – they are all getting more traction as climate change trends impact more levels. I see my series of books as a gentle way to get kids and their parents/educators talking, and understanding from a scientific point of view, about topics that can be scary – like climate change. My books are not scary – they are informative and take a positive, solution-oriented approach.
