Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Margritz.
Grace, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been taking pictures for over a decade now. It started when we lived in Germany for five years. Everywhere I went, there was always something that caught my attention. I traveled to a lot of Germany’s neighboring countries, where there are so many architectural landmarks that are all astoundingly rich and breath-taking. In addition to that, Europe has a lot of amazing countrysides where I easily traveled to by train. This was when I did a lot of landscape photography.
I started my business three years ago here in Colorado Springs and finally pushed myself to be out there and offer what I love to do. I have been working hard to grow my photography business to support my family.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are a lot of photographers in Colorado Springs. A LOT. I’m an introvert and I’m neither social media savvy nor an expert. Those two things go against me while trying to grow my business and BE KNOWN. However, I like my work to speak for itself; it is my resume. Nowadays, you have to expose your life to social media to get this x-number of followers or likes or whatever. For a private person like me, I prefer to expose my work rather than myself.
My advice is to be true to your work and not to what is popular or what sells. Don’t get lost or take someone else’s path in their journey. Stay in your lane. Grow in your lane. Embrace the mistakes and the struggles because they will be your tools to be better… wiser. Never leave home without your camera. Shoot something every day.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I offer portraits to families, couples and high school seniors. I just started boudoir, which, I absolutely love! Each specialty brings out a different side of me when I am behind the camera. When I run a family photo session, my patience is at its strongest. I often wonder why I don’t have that kind of patience with my children when I need it the most, lol. With couples sessions, I get all giddy and awwh-ee because there is something about witnessing love LIVE from people you have never met before. It’s like watching a short happily-ever-after movie – which I adore because I’m such a romantic at heart. Now, high school senior and boudoir sessions bring the most excitement for me because I get to be a fashion photographer, which I have always wanted to be. I love it when my clients come out of their shell and just WERK IT! The time always speeds by when I am working high school senior and boudoir sessions. It’s true when they say, time flies when you are having fun!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My advice would be to check out any local groups in your area but pick a group at your level or higher. Personally, taking workshops has never failed me. Lastly, be friends with other photographers. I have been friends with a very amazing photographer, and she is my go-to person about everything and anything photography-related. She’s awesome!
