Conversations with the Inspiring Jenn Campo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Campo.

Jenn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started The Simple Sort to help busy families spend less time on their daily activities and to-do tasks. This allows people more time to enjoy the things in life that bring them the most joy. Prior to starting The Simple Sort, I was a busy mom, working from home in a variety of positions in the real estate and design industry. I was a property manager for a local real estate investor and was also running a home staging business I owned prior to The Simple Sort. I believe I was born an entrepreneur. I’ve also always been passionate about helping others.

By the time I was 35, I had already been married and divorced once, remarried, a mother of 3, and also lost my own mother to breast cancer. Having to experience difficult times made me stronger, more confident, and more empathetic for others experiencing similar difficulties. It really gave me the knowledge and understanding I needed to enable me to help others through those difficult times. At The Simple Sort, we work with clients in their homes to help them process and declutter their spaces. Many of these clients have been thrown into a state of chaos because of life events such as divorce, a recent death in their family, blending families, or just the regular busyness that happens in their lives. They get to a point where they just do not know what to do, and they really need help, so they call us. We make the process simple. The impact organizing has on people’s lives is what attracted me to this profession and the reason I love it so much. It is a true joy and privilege to help our clients create a space they love, that is easy to maintain, and help them simplify their busy lives.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I always tell people that being an entrepreneur is NOT for the faint at heart. It is a rollercoaster of emotions, and struggles and triumphs. There are many ups and downs and it has been a lot of work. It if were easy, everyone would do it. I started The Simple Sort just over a year ago, and it has not been a smooth road. I’ve had to learn and figure out a lot on my own. I’ve made many mistakes and done things that have scared me, and things I thought I would never do. I believe the biggest difference between those that succeed and those that do not is tenacity. Simply moving forward and continuing to move forward and persevere through even when it gets hard.

There are days I feel like I will not succeed, or I am not smart enough, pretty enough, young enough, etc. I am inspired by many successful women around me but also discouraged at times when I see others succeeding, or getting “there” faster than me. I think what really helps me, and what I suggest to all entrepreneurs, is to have a community around you that is inspiring and wants to see you succeed. Having some sort of support group is essential for success. Whether a friend, spouse, or business partner; you will need someone to help keep you accountable, push you to keep trying, and believe in you as much as you do.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Simple Sort Home Organizing Company story. Tell us more about the business.
At The Simple Sort, our goal is to make it easy to get organized, clear the clutter, and create a space that our client loves to live in. We want to help busy families simplify their space so they can spend less time on their daily to-dos, and more time enjoying activities they love with their loved ones. I have worked hard to create a brand that signifies simplicity as a luxury. When people think of the word “simple” I feel they assume it means they have to sacrifice the things they love, but we believe it is just the opposite. When you can take away the distractions and remove the things that don’t really matter, you make more room for the items that truly matter most.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I am proud to be a woman on this day. I think women have come a long way in the past century. I am blessed that as a woman I can own a successful business and live out my dreams. Women have so many opportunities today, but what I am most excited about is the transformation I am seeing in a community amongst women. More and more women are coming together to support and uplift each other. I call it “community over competition”. Women can be especially competitive and compare each other, but we are also bred to nurture. I love it when I see women helping other women succeed, even in the same industries. One quote I love that sums it up perfectly is: “A candle losses nothing by lighting another candle”. Together, women can burn brighter.
