Meet Tess Condron, Emma Troughton, Nicole Accetta and Ryan Dunn of Blankslate in University

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tess Condron, Emma Troughton, Nicole Accetta and Ryan Dunn.

Tess, Emma, Nicole and Ryan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The four of us met last year in a transfer community that was formerly a frat house at the University of Denver. We started jamming in [guitarist] Ryan’s room before moving to a small storage closet in the basement. We had all just transferred from different schools and didn’t know many people in town, so music was a fun outlet for us. After a couple of months of playing together, we started writing our own music and playing open mics and small gigs around campus. At the end of the school year, we recorded some of our songs with Tyler Imbrogno at Daymoon Studios, and we released our first single – “Westcliff” – on streaming platforms in October!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the first issues we ran into was finding a place to practice. The storage closet we practiced last year was a bit of a squeeze, and we usually had to keep the door open to fit everyone. Needless to say, we got our share of noise complaints! Now we live off-campus and have a band room in our house.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
We try to tell a story with our songs, to have a message behind them. We have a song about a house fire, a song about an elephant seal attack. Just trying to draw on strange things that have happened. Our songs are principled in folk music but become a lot more alternative and electric as we develop them. It’s a great collaborative process.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We have an EP coming out in 2020 that we are really excited about! Nicole — one of our vocalists — is coming back from a semester abroad in January and we are super excited to have the whole band back together. We are also looking forward to the warmer seasons because we love playing outside!
