Meet Kristin Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Adams.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kristin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My passion for photography began with my father, who practiced the art for most of his life. I began as a hobbyist in high school where my father nurtured my interest by teaching me everything he knew. He even set up a darkroom in our bathroom where we developed the film and made prints together until I went off to college.

I continued to photograph for myself for years until I made the decision to make it my career. I am that person who is completely distracted by any animal in my near vicinity, really no matter what else I should actually be doing. Once I realized that I could combine my love of animals with my passion for photography, I started my business in April of 2008. I’ve been doing this going on 12 years now!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There has definitely been a learning curve along the way. Photography evolves rapidly so one has to keep up with that. It takes time to perfect running a business, and I am so lucky I can do both the creative and the business side. I’ve had to learn many techniques over the years working with animals that photographers of humans definitely don’t have to worry about. I’ve learned so much about animal behavior over the years too—I have tricks up my sleeve for all the different situations I’ve been in, animals I’ve worked with. You never know how a session is going to go or how animals are going to behave. But I love the challenge!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I specialize in creating soulful and artistic photographic portrait art for the home that honors the special bond we have with our pets and celebrates the unconditional love they bestow. Although I’m known for my studio work, I really love working outdoors and in people’s homes. Working in a variety of environments provides a lot of opportunity for creativity, and I can really get to know the personalities of my clients. Plus, the animals are always more comfortable when they are at home!

I am most proud of creating a successful photography business for the past 12 years, due in large part to my proven ability to please my clients. This is of utmost importance to me and has resulted in growing my business primarily through repeat clients and their referrals.

I was one of the very first pet photographers in Colorado. The expertise I’ve gained over the years combined with my unwavering patience for—as well as the way I view—my subjects allows me to create the beautiful images that keep my clients coming back for more.

It isn’t easy to be successful in photography because there is a lot of competition, especially these days. So many people get into it thinking it’s a great way to do something they love, but it’s really hard to build a business that can sustain itself. I am really proud that I have been able to do this thing I love for so long!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I wouldn’t say that it’s a moment in particular but more of a series of moments. What I love most is the animals I get to photograph, and the people I’ve met. It’s all about the relationships. A lot of my clients become my friends and they are very important to me, but ultimately, it’s about the animals. I get to love on them, and spoil them, and this is what feeds my soul.
